If it had been available during their lifetimes, W.S. Gilbert and Arthur Sullivan might have made a great comic opera out of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey. To show you how it could have happened, I’ve tried to fit the movie’s storyline to G&S songs.
Anyone unfamiliar with Gilbert & Sullivan can find their works online at the brilliant and comprehensive Gilbert & Sullivan Archive, http://math.boisestate.edu/gas/index.html. The site also has MIDI files that play computerized versions of the melodies, if you’d like to sing along.
I've also added YouTube links to performances of the individual songs. -

He’d opened a long-forgotten box, realizing too late, by the faded scent of attar-of-roses that emanated from the ribbon-tied contents, just what it was those contents were. Taking the papers out of the box a little too hastily and nervously – fearful that these relics of his long-dead past might make his bride jealous – O Irony! – had caused a small metal object to drop from out of the bundle to the floor.

“This is absolutely and with no exaggeration the most stupid thing that you have ever done!” Mountararat hadn’t intended for his voice to end up pitching itself up an octave but apparently he was speaking in (rather squeaky) falsetto now. Irritated, he cleared his throat. Tolloller had turned around, his shoulders shaking. Assuming the worst, Mountararat put a hand on his back. “Shit. Thomas? Shit, I’m sorry, I’m sorry.” He then realised that Tolloller was laughing.

He would turn up in the Chapel at half past eight to unlock the organ loft, and it would be another half an hour before the choir started to trickle in. And even then, no matter how hard he lectured them, they would be waiting until quarter to nine for the full force of the choir to assemble. They would be there until half past twelve, usually, until the cafeteria opened for lunch, and then that would be his social interaction done for the day.

Summary
Opera has always presented a more overt demand for suspension of disbelief than most other dramatic forms, and never more so than with its ongoing fascination with plots based on hanahaki disease. The middle of the nineteenth century saw the emergence of this tidy, sentimental metaphor for tuberculosis – a gory, unpleasant and all too real ailment – and it has lingered ever since. Blood was replaced with roses, hacking coughs with immaculate arias, lingering deaths with graceful swoons.
