    Summary

He's unconscious, has been for hours; the voices he's hearing inside his head are ones he's heard his entire life, reminding him of what is important, what's expected of him, reminding him of who and what he is. Those voices are more real to him now than the voices of the men next to him.

They are on the outskirts of Marseille, France, their mission accomplished. Now the mission has become bringing their team leader back alive, along with each other of course. Though it might be easier if he'd just wake up!

    Summary

Actor, con man extraordinaire, true name and history unknown, sophisticated, aristocratic. Lynn Garrison, ex-Allied operative, a well-brought up young woman of the upper-upper middle class, sister to Craig Garrison. Two people, so different, from different worlds, different backgrounds. Ask either of them and they would have told you, quite firmly, that the other was 'just not my type'. Except, maybe, sometimes - that really isn't the point.

    Summary

August had started out being 'Awful Scary Story' month, but no one could live with the side-effects of that. Then, mid-month, they voted to change it to 'Amazing Amatory Adventures' month, once Actor explained what 'amatory' meant. That had a few side-effects of its own, resulting in a twenty-four hour pass in London that - you guessed it! Somehow Garrison could visualize the whole month of August as a snowball rolling down a steep hill, gathering bulk, speed and momentum, eventually crushing his sanity, and his wallet, flat! Well, at least he could rest a little easier next month - Songful September - what could go wrong with THAT??!

    Summary

They all accepted the missions were dangerous, that each time they went out, something could go wrong. A mission in Germany, that they were used to. A mission in German-occupied territory, or in a country allying itself with Germany, well, that too. Each job had its own set of perils. But somehow they found the missions involving neutral countries had their own pitfalls, ones you wouldn't necessarily consider. After all, Lisbon still gave them shudders to think of that mess! Now, Switzerland - Land of chocolate, pastry, clocks and banks. What could go wrong? Just ask Casino! No, not exactly WHAT could go wrong, but he was laying strong odds that SOMETHING was going to go wrong. Maybe someday Garrison was actually going to start listening to the man!

    Summary

In the TV series episode 'Ride of Terror', we saw Colonel Pryor's confrontation with Garrison and the team, especially Chief. In the story 'Flashback', we heard more of the backstory from Chief, and in the story 'Rescue', it was obvious Meghada had had a prior unpleasant experience with the man herself. Just when and how had SHE run across Pryor? Tucked into that span of time in 'Father Knows Best', between her furious ranting at Goniff and his stupidity about a 'pity fuck', and the aggravating visit by Neil Hargroves that led to her and Goniff finally sharing a bed for the first time, there was an event none of them wanted to think about, not even years later - an event that could have led to tragedy. And that little 'lesson in weaponry' she gave, with the encouragement of Major Kevin Richards, well, Goniff wasn't the only one left with a twitchy stomach! She eventually learned something else too; doing something the Outlander way? Sometimes it just doesn't pay in the long run!

    Summary

They were both driven men, driven by an inner compulsion obvious and well known to those closest to them. Goniff had sticky fingers and a sometimes irresistable urge to 'snaffle' whatever shiny, sparkly or otherwise tempting object that caught his eye, and admittedly some very odd items DID catch his eye. Craig was focused, driven to succeed at whatever he'd currently put his mind to. Those compulsions had sometimes proved annoying, frequently dangerous during the war, though as to which one had been more dangerous, it wasn't even a question. Frankly, most of the team would have given the award to Garrison, a hundred to one - hell, a thousand to one! Now, it was different, different time, different circumstances. The war was over, but the compulsions, well, not so much. Will those compulsions now drive them apart?

When a young woman is caught in the wrong place at the wrong time, she accuses Casino of rape in order to prevent anyone finding out what she was really doing at Hotel Marchant. As the plot thickens, danger reaches out for not only Casino, but also for Major Kevin Richards. Everyone seems to be hiding something in this merry-go-round of lies and ulterior motives. Except for Casino. He was just trying for a decent night's sleep!

    Summary

When HQ assigns a new man to the team, it looks like they really lucked out. Steve Whitaker, a good strong generalist, is quickly becoming everyone's friend. Well, maybe not everyone's. He and Chief just don't seem to mesh, and as the young man sees the others taking to the newcomer more and more, Chief starts to wonder if he'll have a place with the team much longer. He'd thought they were becoming a family; now, he has to wonder. Events soon prove interesting, showing that however different people may be, one thing seems to be a common thread - more often than not, there seems to be a solid sense of - 'you take care of family'

    Summary

War years, sometime after 'Castle With A Thousand Rooms'. Garrison, his men and Major Kevin Richards - six exhausted men looking for a secure place to spend the night, hopefully getting some rest and sustenance. They find all that at Hotel Marchant, that and perhaps more, thanks to two bottles labeled 'Firinnemel' - a very special concoction. Well, they'd always been told the Clan honey'd mead was potent; they are about to find out just HOW potent.

    Summary

Garrison's malaria returns just as they are ordered out on a vital mission. For a very valid reason, Garrison decided not to tell the guys, just count on the pills Doctor AJ Riley gave him to let him continue in the role as team leader. Now, it seems Garrison is getting worse by the minute, and his frustration about that is matched by finding one of the guys at his shoulder every step of the way, short-circuiting some of his wilder flights of fancy. Somehow, they are finding a good excuse for him never to be alone, never go out on his own, even when doing so makes perfect sense. When will he figure out he's being nursemaided? Well, maybe after the hallucinations and nausea and fever and all the rest goes away. Maybe. When the fevers and chills hit full force, the guys are forced to take over the mission totally, leaving Garrison and Goniff in a tiny abandoned cottage to wait it out. As the guys race to accomplish the mission, Goniff finds himself with the task of keeping an increasingly erratic Garrison calm and out of danger. Which part of the team had the most hair-raising job? That's a good question.

    Summary

Garrison gets a recurrence of his malaria, a souvenir of his stint in North Africa, but tries to hide his condition from the guys and everyone else, not really wanting even a short tour under a doctor's care. Considering the symptoms included nausea, headache, muscle aches, profuse sweating, fever and chills, bouts of delirium, oh, and the occasional loss of consciousness, that wasn't so easy. Also, probably not such a great idea as evidenced by that set of reports he writes up. Thankfully, Gil Rawlins is there to help sort things out, with a little help from the guys, and gets something typed up that won't give HQ a nervous breakdown. Afterwards Garrison looks at the original ones he wrote up, and really does want to faint. Some things were scary enough to remember; to see them written down? Absolutely terrifying! And wasn't there some faint recollection about a plane ride?

    Summary

Craig Garrison considered himself a well-educated, highly disciplined, logical, intelligent military officer. Long ago he realized that most situations can be, if not resolved, then at least understood by a detailed examination of all available evidence; he'd had an excellent teacher in that. So when a situation, a problem, arises, one he just can't quite get a grip on by any other means, he decided to go back to the basics, as taught him by one Professor Ignatius J. Milford, one of the smartest men he'd ever met. He did not expect to be told by the professor himself, most sternly, "Craig, my dear boy, I do hate to point out the obvious, but it appears you have a most severe vision problem. You really need to do something about that."

    Summary

In the story 'Childhood's End', Goniff asks himself a very hard question, a question for which he had no answer, but desperately needs one in order to allow himself to go on. Now, in the aftermath, he goes to the one person who just might have that answer. "What will I do when my Humanity is gone, when there is nothing left?"

    Summary

They heard those words over and over again as they made their silent way to the pick-up point. "We buried him." "We buried him". Around and around, the words never stopping, the vision of that coffin, that silent body being lowered into a lonely grave on foreign soil, not even having the peace of knowing he was buried back home. Or at least, in Brandonshire, what passed for home now.

When their plane is struck by lightning, the team ends up a long way from where their mission should have taken them. Farther away than just miles should have accounted for, in a place where the dangers are ones they never could have anticipated or prepared for, with an outcome they could never have imagined.

General Jeffrey Abernathy, life-long bachelor, sits down to tell how he came by his rather large and diverse family, including his son, Rainey, AKA Chief, as well as his godson, Craig Garrison. Maybe the good general isn't telling all, but probably more than he'd have shared before his recent medical scare. Well, it was that bad report from the doctors that put the whole crazy plan into motion! That's okay, Garrison and the guys can handle crazy; they have lots of experience.

Casino was happy with his life, well-content. Hell, went around with a grin on his face most of the time, at least when he wasn't off on a 'consultation' or trying to annoy the hell out of Goniff or Actor. (He still knew better than to annoy Chief too much.) So why did the reappearance of Dolly, no, the NEW appearance of Dolly's cousin, Myra shake him up so? He sat there and stared and could only think about that music Meghada played when she got really really pissed, 'Ride of the Valkyries', along with her description of what the hell a 'Valkyrie' was. That, right there, standing in the doorway - THAT was exactly what he pictured when he conjured up the image of a Valkyrie! DAMN!!! Except, he'd never have had the imagination to also conjure up two pint-sized blonde curly-headed mites clinging to her skirts. Once he got himself in order again, AND got that dropped jaw back in place, he just HAD to wrangle an introduction!
