    Summary

"I think you should give Fitzjames a chance. He is quite handsome.” James' eyes snap up to Anne and she giggles. “I can tell from that letter he wants to give you a chance... He wants to pluck all of the berries from the strawberry bush.”

“Anne!" A pink heat crawls up James' collar. "I doubt he thinks of me like that."

    Summary

Modern AU in which Francis and James Ross are roommates at uni, bonding over science.

They settled in quickly, easing into a natural sort of rhythm. James was more of a morning person, and Francis would often wake up to the scent of coffee and croissants. James seemed to forget entirely about food when he was studying, so Francis would deposit a bag of crisps on his desk when he left for the restroom. When they both had class, they would walk together until their paths diverged and they would often meet again later at the library.

    Summary

Crozier and Ross have a bit of a misunderstanding.

“I know you don’t like to be the center of attention,” James said, stepping forward to stand beside him, looking out at the garden with it’s new, spring buds.

Francis laughed, and shook his head. “I hate it,” he said. “I don’t know how you can tolerate all those eyes on you, all those questions. Knowing they’re going to talk about you later, dissect everything you said…”

    Summary

Francis’ first view of Venice was not a prepossessing sight: the low-lying islands in the murky lagoon, the coffin-like gondolas, the sea-fret that came creeping on the clammy air. Perhaps the heady pomp of Rome would have been better after all, or Palermoʼs dry autumnal heat.

When they have fallen to silence, all rush and fury given way to the mere pattering of raindrops on the window, James’s hand slides across the covers.

This is not the first St Patrick’s Day, indulging in every vice applied to his countrymen, that Francis feels close to drinking himself past Irishness.

    Summary

As Inuksak spoke and I translated, we heard one of the men outside the tent get up and walk out over the thick new snow. I thought nothing of it – I assumed he had other business – but an extraordinary change came about Sir James.

He lifted his head, looked behind him. His expression showed only a slight strain, but to me, accustomed to reading that rigid face, it was the look of Lot. Inuksak fell silent. Then Sir James rose and bolted. At the departing back of the man, he shouted, “Frank!"

“They’re not out, persay,” James says, running his hand along the fabric. “I just snuck this one out of the trunk before we left harbour.”

    Summary

    Summary

Sometimes James disappears for days, one time weeks, and Francis becomes more aware of everything. Mostly of how slowly time seems to pass without the noisy bustling coming from James' office. It's as if the house misses James as much as Francis does, becoming quiet and oppressing, every empty room a reminder of absence.

(Months after getting rescued, Francis still struggles with adjusting to Aston Abbotts. After James returns from a trip, they reunite properly.)

    Summary

Francis was fond of kissing and being kissed, fond of a hand stroking in his hair or on his back, fond of hearing James’ choked sounds of pleasure and feeling James’ yard in his hand, but he would not suffer himself to be touched thus in return. The idea James had, the risk he would be taking, was this: a way of bringing Francis pleasure without the use of his touch.
