This time, the butterfly transmitted a scene of a bustling street. On the margins, Xie Lian could make out clusters of ghosts and demons pressed against one another, all mangled clumps of monstrous limbs and heads. In the center of the street, however, it became harder to discern individual ghosts; it was like the entire population of Ghost City had become a single, churning mass of raw sex. On the periphery, ghost fires of various colors set the seedy street ablaze, while amidst the central mass, rainbow-colored slime coated every slick body. There were some off-beat shrieks and bellows, but for the most part, the mass seemed to emit a tuneless, gibbering hum, rising and falling with the writhing waves of interlocking souls.

For some reason, however, this time he came to a jagged halt and whirled on Feng Xin, one finger raised in unmistakable anger, his other hand clenching the silk of his sleeve at his side.
“You—” he began, only to grit his teeth around whatever he was about to say at the very last second. Feng Xin stopped walking as well, hooking a hand in his belt – he raised an eyebrow, eyes never leaving Mu Qing’s.
And then, Mu Qing blushed.

Feng Xin freezes, face close enough to count each one of Mu Qing's eyelashes. Blood rushes south. Some little voice in the back of his head quips that he's going to develop a specific interest in Mu Qing's thighs if this keeps happening. A second little voice assures him he already has.Feng Xin ignores all of that, just as he does every time, and especially ignores how Mu Qing's tongue wets his lips before he speaks.
"Hm? I thought you would be bigger than that." Mu Qing shifts his thigh slightly, subtle, but the pebble tossed into Feng Xin's pond creates waves instead of ripples. "Just this? The fabled, mighty tool of Ju Yang…." Mu Qing leans closer, his breath teasing Feng Xin's lips as he speaks. "...Turns out to be nothing more than a dull knife in a sword's sheath."

Six months, and the two of them are the same. Always talking, always fighting, always seeking. This long, and Mu Qing doesn’t know if it’s supposed to be easy. If he should be struggling with lowering his defenses, should hate sitting on the counter while Feng Xin chops carrots and forces a sliver past his grimacing lips.
Six months, and Mu Qing doesn’t know how to say if this is love.

Feng Xin needs to sit down.
But not here, because this is Mu Qing’s bedroom, and Feng Xin wouldn’t ordinarily have barged in at all but Xie Lian had asked and Mu Qing is sitting in a puddle of his sleeping robes, silky hair flopping into his eyes. He tries to brush it away, pouting. His hand doesn’t even emerge from his sleeve. He pouts harder.
Feng Xin possibly makes a noise like a tea kettle and sits down right where he’s standing. Because fuck chairs and propriety.
Mu Qing apparently gives up on his hair, because he scoots to the edge of his bed to peer down at Feng Xin, head tipped to the side like an adorable little bird. Feng Xin is going to die.

Mu Qing turns to glare at Feng Xin. He looks like he’s just barely holding himself back from crossing the short distance to their table and smacking Feng Xin in the face. “Do you think I fucking care about Starbucks, a capitalist corporation with overpriced coffee that pays dog shit and abuses its employees, and whether their stupid fucking overpriced furniture is vandalized?” He says through gritted teeth.
Pei Ming might be imagining it, but he thinks he sees Feng Xin's lips twitch to an almost smile-laugh.

Mu Qing has been going on missions with other gods and without Feng Xin.
And this. Doesn't matter. Of course. Or at least it shouldn't matter. So what if most of the joint missions the two of them have been on have always been together? Feng Xin and Mu Qing, never without each other. Even if before it was reluctant and vicious and they spent as much time beating each other up as they spent eliminating the ghosts and spirits. They work well together, they don't need to talk to communicate plans, their fighting styles sync in a way that is almost second nature now. Like a dance they could do in their sleep.
