Once a neat trail, the string became messier as time passed. Sometimes, it would tangle when a foreign string would overlap with his. On other occasions, it would swerve away from the path when a strange thing disrupted the way. So he would find himself cutting the yarn, too often for his liking. The length shortened and shortened and shortened, ever so near to finality.
As he held the remaining thin thread between nimble fingers, he grasped onto it, and never let go.
