Summary
If Buck analyzed the worst days of his life, they would all have one thing in common – they all started out great. If he ever concentrated too much on that pattern, then every good thing that ever happened to him would probably just give him crippling anxiety as he waited for the other shoe to drop. And that afternoon would have definitely caused him intense anxiety based on how good it had already been so far.
But then maybe he would have known to quit while they were ahead and go home, and they wouldn’t have gotten into such a mess.
---
In which Buck and Christopher have a wonderful afternoon up until they get caught in the wrong place at the wrong time.

They live in a world with fickle soulmarks. You weren’t born with them. They didn’t make it easy to tell who your soulmate would be. Sometimes you’d have known the person for years only to have something change in one of their lives and a mark would appear. They appeared when the fates decided you were ready to meet your soulmate. For Evan Buckley the fates decided to wait until after he has survived being crushed by a truck, a pulmonary embolism, and a tsunami. The tsunami seems to be the trigger. Eddie Diaz has lost his wife in an accident and nearly lost his son to tsunami. He doesn’t have time for the soulmarks that decided to finally show up.

Summary
Buck couldn’t figure out how he could possibly explain to the kid that he couldn’t. That he wasn’t strong enough to keep fighting, that he was tired and the darkness of the pain was unbearably alluring. But he knew that it didn’t matter in that moment what he wanted, all that mattered was protecting his universe.
(A more heartbreaking writing of the tsunami and it’s aftermath, with the blossoming hope that comes only with the force of a tidal wave)
