Narnia is not to be tamed. She is not to be silenced, she will not bleed to death for us. We belong to her and only to her and Aslan we shall bow. – Sir Peter Wolf’s-Bane, the Magnificent, Emperor of the Lone Islands, Lord of Cair Paravel, Knight of the Most Noble Order of the Lion, High King of Narnia, first of the four Kings and Queens of Old

I have loved no woman in my life but Narnia. My devotion to her shall not be diminished, shall not waver until the stars rain down from her heavens and we shall join her once again. – Edmund, the Just, Duke of Lantern Waste, Count of the Western March, Knight of the Noble Order of the Table, King of Narnia, third of the four Kings and Queens of Old

Susan was left alone. She had no family and nowhere to go, not counting Eustace's parents who rejected her out of anger and grief. The only place left (according to the police, anyway) was the orphanage.

Tom just wanted to be free. Too bad he had to wait another year before he was of age. Instead he had to return to that joyless place where he grew up, only... why does something seem off about that new girl?

Or, what happens when the loveless, power-hungry young man meets the Gentle Queen who rejected her kingdom, and how their lives continue to collide.

„My dear boy“, Mrs Beaver had said, a cupboard and a lifetime away, when Rhindon was heavy in his trembling hands and Edmund’s lip was split open and bleeding. “You are not Atlas.” She’d smiled, and whistled through her teeth. “You cannot shoulder the world alone.”

“It’s a small world”, Susan had said, the plaid of her skirt still damp and heavy. Peter had stared at the quiver on her back and said nothing.

    or:

Peter tries to shoulder the world. Susan tries to live.

The young prince looks at them and sees children. Lucy looks at the young prince and sees bone painted black, eyes that have just seen a Talking Beast. (She remembers a little girl under a red umbrella and a little boy with blood dripping from his lips.)

Her hand twitches as Peter cooks his head. “We can wait a few years if you’d like”, he says and Lucy feels like looking in a mirror beyond the wardrobe. She smiles.

(She can smell Aslan in every breath she takes, can hear the trees singing still, even as Susan isn’t Queen yet, a school girl in plaid)

Suddenly Joyce stumbles into Narnia. Meeting the four Pevensies, she gets taken in and care of. A tension builds up between her and Edmund, although Joyce is clueless that he himself is a King, too. Peter though seems interested in her too and just as Lucy and Susan found out that there's no way back to England, an attack puts Joyce to the test and she has to proof that Aslan picked the right person to bring back peace to Narnia.

"It's vital to remember who you really are. It's very important. It isn't a good idea to rely on other people or things to do it for you, you see. They always get it wrong."
    - Terry Pratchett, Sourcery

It's not actually easy to be a living legend. The story usually tries to go on without you.

Waiting for her children at the train station was probably one of the happiest and saddest moments of Helen Pevensie’s life. War was a dangerous thing. Families and lives were torn apart. People changed forever.

"She turned and began to perceive. Sunlight soaked the air and sank into stone. A radiant alabaster hall materialized. Cair Paravel."

Susan and Caspian, both shaken after the events of the Pevensies' second trip to Narnia, reencounter each other in dream. Then they wake up. As Susan endures the Second World War and Caspian continues his reign in Narnia, they are left to pick up the pieces of their hearts and their faith. Their story continues.

this made me cry so hard i had to retreat to the bathroom so my friend wouldn't ask questions i wouldn't find the normal answers for (because 'i've read about the kids in narnia' is not the normal answer for such teary hysteria)

i'm not even sure what got me so hard. it's not that i care about the books or the story (i've read the books and watched the movies, sure, but i was a kid myself back then), i barely remember the characters and how they were but something about the writing and they way the author managed to describe susan and others had pulled at my heartstrings. it's the description of war, and of a magical world that you were a part of, and the description of what it was like to grow up sooner than you needed to (aka all the children during the war times) that poked at me from all sides and made me cry.

i fucking loved the interpretation (or rather, the re-do of what the actual author wasn't able to do) of susan that managed to walk away and not forget. because lewis has made susan shallow, or, at least, the grown version of susan, and the fic author has brought the layers upon layers of a character onto her, it breathed the life into her and made her a multidimensional personality.

i didn't even realize that there were religious connotations up until the lucy bit but it makes sense, i guess. for me, personally, as a non-religious person, it was easier to accept that narnia was some sort of psychological getaway for the children of war but you can call religion a getaway too so it is still a beautiful story regardless.

recommend it for everyone who wants to read something beautiful. please read alone or in the presence of someone who would silently accept your tears the cause of which is fanfiction
