Summary
The ten days I spend there without Francis are hellish, something out of a bleak, war-torn painting—all grey skies and bloodied, hopeless soldiers. I lay around in his bed, not sleeping until I take a pill or two from his medicine cabinet, and then passing out for five or six uninterrupted hours at a time, waking up in the same position I lay down in with drool all over my face. I flip through the channels on his grainy television and don’t shower or shave or change my pajamas. I snort thin lines of cocaine and regret it every time. I exist off of endless mugs of black tea with sugar and brandy, plus sour olives and tiny pickles and maraschino cherries that I eat straight from their jars, standing in front of the open fridge. Francis never keeps any fucking food in the place.

Summary

Summary
If this could settle the score, if this could allow Bunny to move on, then didn’t Henry, as his killer, have a duty to allow it and take his place? Perhaps, if karma really was proportionate, he too would die instantly.
Or, Henry Winter has the complete wrong idea about duty.

Summary
"Why did you kiss me, that day?"
Henry blinked once, then twice, but I knew he knew exactly what I was referring to. Then, to my surprise, he sent me a pitying look, but it was also of amusement, as if I had asked the simplest of things–if dinosaurs still existed, or who Homer was. As if he couldn't quite believe yet that I was questioning such. I braced myself.
"Because I wanted to."

Summary
Unseen of the others, I noticed an intense glance between Henry and Camilla across the table. The light from the ceiling made Camilla’s hair shine like gold. Her gray eyes rested calmly on Henry. When I looked at him quickly, I saw a strange glow in his eyes, and I suddenly knew: he had seen Camilla in this state. He had brought her there. I swallowed.

Summary
Camilla slid between us. Only moments before, the three of us had been entangled in a warm, pleasant and promising embrace. Now we sat rigid and upright, eyes wide open and clothes askew, and stared at Bunny like at Charon himself.

Summary
Sometimes, I couldn’t suppress the thought that we two alone would manage to get out of the whole story relatively undamaged as we moved on fairly quickly after the unfortunate incidents. We didn’t dwell on it, we rarely even talked about it in that first time of blissful erotic explorations. Of course, there was the occasional nightmare both of us had to endure. But it sure helped to not be alone when waking up from one of those.

Summary
For all my faults — many, no doubt, if the breadth of my father’s criticism was anything to go by — I would not call myself unobservant in matters of human nature.
