"The CMC's Adventures In Radiator Springs"
- Part 1 of CMCARS
Doc has a secret. Sheriff's the only one who knows. As Doc's secret takes its toll on his health, however, he realizes he might have stumbled across a few of the Piston Cup's own. And sometimes, to tell one secret, you have to tell them all.
Doc lives, luckily, and Lightning never needed him more before.
Because sometimes racing is a literal trial by fire.
This is not a dust storm, it is not a tornado. It's not even the fire, raging in the mountains under lightning far above. This is the force of himself, and at 200 miles an hour, it plows him head-first into the wall. They say he went airborne. They say he rolled--eight times, maybe more. Straight down the track, like a cue ball. Would've been gentler in the apron. It's a miracle he didn't injure anyone else.
He doesn't remember any of that, though he swears he can remember the pain. His nurse swears he doesn't. "Trust me, honey," she says. "What you're feeling is the pain you're in right now."

Racing's changed a lot. Or maybe it was always changing, change pouring from the racers, the race itself, and into the fringes of sponsorship and spectator and spectacle. Maybe this is where it was always headed.
At the start of his first season as Lightning's crew chief, Doc reflects on how the sport has changed, and what he and Lightning will need to be for each other. The aftermath of last season's tiebreaker race presents new challenges--challenges Lightning's not quite ready for.
A glint of navy and a familiar outline parked next to the crew chief stand has his head spinning, and he unconsciously rises out of his chair to get a closer look. Feeling slightly dazed, he begins.
“Hey, did that look like-”
Before he can finish his sentence, the image cuts to an overview of McQueen’s pit crew, finally landing on a close up of his new crew chief. Gray haired and stern faced, barking instructions into the head piece. The announcer cuts him off.
“Darrell, it appears McQueen has got himself a pit crew, and look who he has for a crew chief.”
It can’t be, Smokey thinks, eyes glued to the scream. Louise has his arm in a vice grip. He can feel the crescents of her nails digging into his skin.
“Wow, this is history in the making! Nobody has seen the racing legend in over fifty years!”
For a moment the entire bar goes dead quiet, and Smokey's mind goes blank.
