Hi.
My name is Maxine Caulfield. If you're reading this, you've gotten hold of my journal.
Rude!
If you're still reading this, you've entered a good news/bad news/good news situation.
The first piece of good news is that the second piece of good news is a surprise.
The bad news is I have to explain quite a lot of things to you before I get to the surprise.
Please bear with me during this transitional period.

Dan Howell and Phil Lester lead anything but normal lives, but they were content with the direction they’d taken and happy with their current situation. But soon, they begin to realize that things aren’t right anymore; they’re not in the world they should be.
“That’s because you’re ruining our fucking lives, you sadist,” Dan said, scowling at the ceiling. He seemed to be ignoring the fact that his insolence would have consequences.
“What stupid trope are you putting us in next?” Phil asked wearily.
“It doesn’t even matter, does it?” Dan said, “They’re going to keep writing it as long as they want. They’ll find a trope.”
“But only if people read it,” Phil said.
“Then don’t read this stupid, overblown story!” Dan yelled at the ceiling, “You’re enabling this horrible author. You’re making us suffer.” While Dan was speaking, Phil had a realization.
“All of this…” Phil said in horror, “All of this dialogue we’re giving. We’re helping them shill this story.”
Title from xkcd's "Hofstadter".

Summary
Eternal recurrence, or eternal return, is a theory of determinism present in a number of world religions. It states that all cause and effect has been fixed since the first cause set the universe in motion. One answer to this is the hypothesised presence of true randomness. In literary words, we will throw chaos at the stars that crossed our lovers.
These are two chapters written for, but which will not be used in, 'Eternal Return' - a work in progress set in several of the endless iterations of Tokyo Babylon. Drawing on the manner of CLAMP, characters resonate with the infinitely unfolding iterations of themselves, like a gong struck through a paper fan. The universe and its events repeat themselves without true beginning or end. Sometimes, the dice stumble on their way from earth to heaven and back again.

(Now complete!)
If you turn left instead of turning right, how many times does the universe branch?
It had been six years of working together. Six years of sexual tension, and no one ever made a move. But what if someone had? How many worlds would have been created? How many of those worlds would have ended in heartbreak?
Post-finale, Gilfoyle builds an AI dating simulation to figure out how things could have gone differently.
Near-future sci-fi in the vein of Her, Black Mirror, or Devs, but with a more optimistic bent.
