Summary
When the day started, Kelly didn't put much thought into it. It was just a normal shift, a normal day, until he noticed an unfamiliar Floater walk out of the Firehouse. His mind freezes on the man. A topical Floater doesn't look like that. Look at those arms. A topical Floater doesn't treat the station he subbing at with that much dedication and care, but Evan Buckley isn't like your normal floater.
Kelly attempts small talk, not his favorite thing, with the quiet and withdrawn Floater; however, any attempt of friendship is ignored. Buckley just keeps to himself and makes no attempts to engage with the rest of Firehouse 51 or any Firehouse he floats at.
Who is this man? Why is he keeping everyone at arm's length? Why is he on edge all the time? Why does the word Family cause a visceral reaction?

While responding to the call, one of them ends up becoming seriously injured due to a ceiling collapse. In the aftermath of the call, Stella tries to find out the cause of the fire with OFI's help and in the process is forced to revisit a part of her traumatic past in order to help connect and relate to the victim.

Newly promoted Captain Kelly Severide has his work cut out for him on his first day as Squad Captain when Firehouse 51 responds to a mysterious fire call where he rescues someone who has a connection to the past.
As the mystery begins to unfold and more people including members of OFI are affected, Severide and Kidd dig deeper into the investigation as the stakes grow higher. The rest of Firehouse 51 gets dragged into the mess when they too began to become targets after a call.
