Milan-San Remo, 2022. Mathieu van der Poel returns, after at least two months out of racing. The start-line is packed with big names, Tadej Pogačar, Wout van Aert, Primož Roglič, and Mads Pedersen among them. His first race of the season, only called up to fill in for those ill. With ‘no expectations’ on the Dutchman, he took third place, ahead of his old rival, Wout van Aert, who finished in eighth place.
The picture of Mathieu on the podium makes Wout do a double take.
