"People knew I worked for the Foreign Office, but only that. And that only because when people heard 'the Foreign Office,' they thought of diplomatic cables and stuffy embassies. The truth, while not more glamorous, was a lot more dangerous. I worked in the branch of the Foreign Office that was called the Secret Intelligence Service, as part of the Special Operations Executive. My work was mostly administrative, supporting the agents and assets conducting espionage, sabotage and reconnaissance in occupied Europe, not not always. Sometimes, like today, I took a more direct role."
