“I don’t want you to go.”
Beck’s lost track of how many times those exactly words left his mouth in the last twenty-four hours. He keeps saying it over and over and over, hoping that maybe it’ll help. But it doesn’t. Nothing does. Mace is leaving, and there’s nothing he can do about it.
Sixteen months is a long time to be separated from the person you love most.
Good thing Mace has some tricks up his sleeve.

To be frozen to death in the mainframe coolant was not a comfortable way to go, but what bothered Mace, the engineer on board of the spaceship Icarus 2, much much more was not knowing if they - the 8-persons strong crew chosen to rekindle the sun with a Manhattan-sized interstellar bomb - would succeed in saving the human species before he died. To his own surprise, he was saved by someone he knew since childhood: Dr. Chris Beck, flight surgeon from the Ares 3 program, teammate of Mace's parents Mark and Beth Watney, old friend of the family and one of the crew members on Icarus 1, who went MIA 27 years ago somewhere near the sun and had been presumed dead since then. However the joy of reunion didn't last long: Soon they found out that the bomb carried by Icarus 2, although launched successfully, didn't work as well as theory dictated. More must be done to save humanity - but would they live long enough to do it?
