It was agreeable, he had no shame in admitting—a luxury, even, something halfway decadent, with the both of them wet and slippery where they touched. His breathing steadied, and he closed his eyes as James’ thumb moved in gentle circles.

    Summary

A series of vignettes exploring the relationships between Francis Crozier, James Clark Ross, Ann(e) Coulman Ross, and James Fitzjames in the years 1858-1870ish (aka, afterlife fluff.)

All chapters are largely stand-alone, and the story updates every Monday!

The first chapter, "Adding Shadows to the Walls of the Cave," is my fond addition to the celebrations in honor of our beloved James Fitzjames's 207th birthday.

    Summary

Crozier foolishly believed that the first Magpie case he was consulted on would be solved by the time supper was ready. He swept into Sir John Barrow’s opulent home, been directed to the man’s private collection, observed the empty space where prized swords once hung, the letter pinned in their place, the feather that had fallen to the floor.
“You’re not looking for a magpie, gentleman,” he announced in that tone which had prevented his advancement at Scotland Yard ) as he held the feather between his thumb and forefinger. “You’re looking for a peacock.”

The Magpie, dashing gentleman thief, has been running rampant all over London, robbing society of their treasures and delighting the masses with his daring and charm.

Private Detective Francis Crozier intends to stop him.

    Summary

England is a dream, emerging from the thinning mist; unreal.

England is on this limping frigate; one of the last to leave. Men in blankets, wrapped in tarps, the sweat of waking nightmares oily in their hair.

James keeps England in the pocket of his greatcoat, tucked against his heart.

    Summary

When they were sleeping in their sacks, before this dreadful limbo, James used to greet him with a soft kiss, every time he woke up. It was one of Francis' most precious joys, discovering where that kiss might land that day: on his nose, maybe? Sometimes on his forehead. Often, on the corner of his lips. Once, on his right eyelid (James used to sleep on Francis' right side, so that he could lay on his left side and hide his bad eye against his backpack, because, "it's useless anyway and I don’t like when I can’t see when I wake up.")

Hanging from the ceiling was a broken chandelier. Staring at it, Collins could imagine the man from the story trying to hang himself from it. He could imagine the devil standing on the other side of the black window.
    The devil smiled at him.

    Summary

She refers, of course, to the Chinese cloisonné side comb she’d somehow acquired during her time in the Opium Wars. Intricate bits of enamel, amber gold and moss green, oxblood red and the vital blue of the jay’s breast, all nested together in a stylized interpretation of a bird. She’d carried it with her their whole time in the Arctic. Secreted in the shaft of her boot or against her breast, it had witnessed first their hatred—hatred, he thinks, a hard little smile on his lips. Hatred, as though there was ever a time they did not love one another, ever a time their magnets did not nose round to the north of the other. It simply wore another face then, a grotesque mask.

    Summary

“You know,” Francis said, later that evening. “I told William that we were living as husband and wife, but we haven’t really had anything like a wedding, have we. I only started calling you Lady Crozier when we went to Portugal, because anything else would have been suspect.”

James looked up from the sketch he’d been doing, Francis in profile. “Francis… we can’t. There isn’t a church in the world that would marry us.”

    Summary

Older Midshipmen and sailors used to terrify the ship’s boys with this when James had been young; horrid tales of shipwrecks in distant places, of lots drawn, of bones picked over in order to survive. "Be glad that you be on a English ship, lads," they used to say with relish, "fer the French have a taste for boy."

Officers assured them it was the last resort of those who had never received the fine training and strict discipline of the British Navy. It was a warning of the very worst thing that could occur on the barren, uncaring sea; a thing that so rarely happened it had become little more than a ghost story.

And yet here James was, sitting on a barren, uncaring island with scurvy in his bones and a gnawing ache in his stomach.

    Summary

James’ sight had begun to fail on their long walk toward Fort Resolution. It had started with his left eye, and, while at first it had seemed contained, by the time they were England bound aboard the Enterprise, his right eye had begun to fail as well. When they finally reached England’s shores, five long years after they sailed, James had gone completely blind.
