Laurent had finally straightened in his chair, his knuckles white where they clenched around his cup. "I have only ever been alone," he spat. His eyes bored into Damen, a challenge and a threat. "Ever since Damianos of Akielos met my brother on the field at Marlas and cut him down, I have been alone."
Damen, still a slave, is falling in love with Laurent, and, against all of his instincts, Laurent is falling in love with him too. Unfortunately, they don't know how to deal with that at all. There's lots of staring and general pining.
This is my own recreation of the time after Nesson-Eloy, because I will never be over the two of them trying to figure out who they are to each other.
Laurent is captured at Fortaine on the eve of battle - but instead of facing the dungeon, he finds Damen and himself forced back to court at the palace of Arles, to face the Regent’s twisted machinations. Standing before the Veretian Council, Laurent is presented with an impossible choice.
