"A shave, a minor haircut, several weeks of consistent sleep with the help of some of Banner’s sedatives, and he was feeling more like good old Bucky than he had in almost seventy years. Something was still different though, and a long hour studying his face in the mirror, finding every new line, the touches of fading hair at his temples, the small scars from his goggles and mask, had shown him that there was no going back to the cocksure twenty-something who had chased skirts as if his life depended on it.
Might as well make the best of what was left."
He's had so many names that he honestly didn't remember them all - some of them, he put significant effort into forgetting. But now, free from his captors, the man once known as the Winter Soldier, Prizrak, the ghost story that hunts down ghost stories, tries to rediscover what it means to be himself... and what it means to be human.
Finding your place in the world is hard enough as it is. Finding your place in a world that isn't so sure it wants you in it, now that's another challenge entirely.

Steve wraps him in several towels and pulls the whole bundle into his arms. “Bucky, what were you doing?”
Bucky’s still shaking like he’s going to fall apart. “You said,” he starts, but stops as he seizes up and his teeth chatter. “You said to follow the directions on the bottle…”
Steve snatches up the shampoo bottle and scans the directions on the back. Lather, rinse, repeat.
Repeat. Oh, god.
“Bucky,” Steve says slowly, “how many times did you repeat this?”

The one where Steve gets a dog, and Bucky and the dog don't get along, until suddenly they do. That's Bucky's dog now, Steve.
“I’ll just meet a dog. One dog.”
The grin that stretched across Steve’s face was enough to make Bucky feel like this was the right choice, then he saw him start to stand and had to suppress a groan.
“Great! Let’s go!”
He should have known that when Steve put his mind to things they happened as soon as he could help.

This story takes place in the alternate timeline created when Steve chose to stay in 1945. There will be significant differences in this world and the MCU.
