This story, based on the Shadow and Bone trilogy combined with the Netflix show, starts at the end of Siege and Storm with the battle between the Darkling and the Sun Summoner.

Aleksander straightens an invisible wrinkle in his kefta, his head cocked slightly as he waits for Nikolai to make his move. They stall for a long beat, monster facing monster, until Nikolai swallows compulsively and starts skipping sideways like an awkward pigeon - Aleksander is forced to to mask a mocking laughter behind a very, very fake fit of cough not to sour the beast's moods - until their shoulders almost brush.
His smell is almost unbearable. Aleksander is well acquainted with the vile smells of men, animals, of the living and the dead, but this rancid whiff of stale sweat and dried blood reminds him all too much of a battlefield. Or a graveyard, since he can recognize the faintest hint of wet dirt lingering about him.
