Distracted by a Frenchman who he was really having quite a good time toying with. Some self-righteous meathead who seemed to know how to come just out of his peripheries. Well, maybe he’d also gotten a bit cocky. But it was still rude. Of course, once he’d found his bearings, he’d decked him right back. Satisfying to say the least, his lessons with Roach had been paying off. He didn’t realize how many places he hurt until quite a while after, as Ed gives him a look full of worry.

“Put. It. Down.” Soft, deadly, Edward gave a final warning, watching Izzy’s face. “I won't shoot you unless you make me.”
Izzy laughed, hollow and humorless. “Right, because you caaaaaare about me, do you,” he half-sang, sneering. “Because I’m your friend,” his mouth twisted on the word, “is that it, Edward?” He inhaled, and let it out in a shaky sigh, the frantic energy dissipated. “No, Ed. We’re not friends. We never were.” He looked sad, Edward thought, and his gut twinged and his eyes widened as Izzy wrapped his free arm around Stede again and brought the blade away from his throat, holding it high.
Izzy's hand began a slow, deliberate arch, and he stared into Edward’s eyes as he brought the knife down toward Stede’s heart.
“Don’t-“ Stede cried.
Edward fired.

Summary
Ed is offered up by his family to marry the crown prince of Dulchene in exchange to save what is left of their country and their army. His voyage to Dulchene is ripe with abuse and mistreatment-- bringing a very different man than who he was when left his homeland. Ed has sworn that he will make the royal family pay for what was done to him-- to his country-- but he didn't count on Stede.
Stede is nothing like the other people Ed has met from Dulchene. He's thoughtful, kind, and endearing-- even if he's a bit eccentric. Ed is drawn to him even before he finds out he's the man he's sworn to hate forever-- the man he's promised he'd even kill if the opportunity arises. There are a lot of missteps, some accidental hurts, but as Ed learns to trust Stede and his odd band of friends that care for him like he is one of their own, they figure out that some things are worth the struggle to build.
There might even be a chance to make their world a better place once Stede and Ed figure out what's happening between them. They might just even figure out that they've been falling in love far longer than they care to admit.
