    Summary

And, as the weeks turned into months, Margaret’s suspicions seemed to come true. Standing in her kitchen, washing the dishes Mike had left out before he went to work, Margaret watched as Beth came home drunk day after day. She watched as Beth failed to bring out the trash, and as her front garden turned into some sort of suburban nightmare. She watched as Beltik came back, only for Beth to not open the door.

It was a tragedy, really, only Margaret felt vindicated.

Yes, maybe she hadn’t been allowed to go to college, and maybe Jean kept her awake even if she wanted nothing more than to drink and sleep, but at least Beth hadn’t gotten her dream life either.

OR: Margaret watches Beth through her kitchen window.

    Summary

When her mother deliberately crashes their car, it ends Beth’s life as she knows it and strands her at Methuen Home. She has yet to learn of the chain of events this will set in motion. The one that will start with her introduction to the world of chess, give her a new mother, and take her far beyond the borders of Lexington.

As she works her way towards the very centre of that world, she meets numerous other people along the way. But among weak opponents, friendships, rivalries, and hardships there is one person who sticks out from among them all. Vasily Borgov, the intimidating World Champion from the Soviet Union with a face that is much harder to read than the sixty-four squares he rules over, catches her eyes from the start and she finds it impossible to look away.

Or, we follow Beth through canon and into the years beyond as she struggles with finding her place in the world, creating bonds with others, and substance abuse, but also finds the good things in life, such as success, friendship, and love.

    “Jonny Hale.”

He was reaching across the chessboard to shake her hand, but Beth froze. She knew that voice, it had echoed through her head with the same intensity as Benny’s laugh for the last few minutes. So, this was the face of the asshole who thought he could insult her; who laughed about her behind her back; who turned her friends against her.

    “Beth Harmon. It’s a pleasure.”

OR: During the French Open in Marseilles Beth unfortunately meets a chess player, who is more than just a sore loser - he is a dangerous asshole as well.

    Summary

“It began slowly at first, like a smoldering ember, a too-long glance here, a lingering thought there, and then burnt and burnt until it became an inferno, to which he cast himself into her flaming locks and lips, searing his fate in hell with that first burning kiss that was seared into his memory, just like the particular shade of scarlet she slicked her lips with.”

The concept of desire, as described by Vasily Borgov.

Beth Harmon has achieved everything she ever wanted, so why wasn't she satisfied? And why couldn't she forget about a certain man in a silly hat.

If only she could concentrate long enough to defeat her current opponent, she might have time to deal with the whirlwind of emotions wrecking havoc in her brain.

My take on: Beth goes to Benny after her victory over Borgov.
