It's the most wonderful time of the year. There'll be much mistletoeing and hearts will be glowing when loved ones are near. It's the most wonderful time of the year.
He’s miles away though, trapped in his head, so Phyllis takes charge. She hails the cab, encourages him into it. As she goes to climb in herself, she sees Buddy lead a weeping Sally out onto the street. Phyllis looks at Buddy. Buddy looks at Phyllis. They nod to one another. Phyllis knows they will never see each other again. She thinks Buddy knows it too. He’s never been as dumb as he pretends to be.
Phyllis gets into the cab. Ben hasn’t even noticed that she lingered outside. He is half slumped in his seat, staring out of the window, but when Phyllis has spoken to the driver and settled back, he gropes for her hand. She lets him hold it, clinging like she is a buoy in a storm, but she does not speak. There will surely be words. They will not be here.
Phyllis and Ben have some things they need to work out.
Buddy had chosen the army, when they signed up, and Ben thought he’d lost his damn mind. Between the marching and the sleeping outside, Buddy had to be crazy. The navy was the thinking man’s choice – a bunk to call your own, three meals on time every day and no chance of marching till your feet bled.
Sometime between college and that night in 1971, Ben Stone went away to the war.

She’d had enough of the stage, and the dancing and the late nights. She’d had enough of the people too, the liars and the back stabbers. She had a new purpose now. They’d win the war and Ben would come home to marry her, and then she’d be a lawyer’s wife. And a lawyer’s wife couldn’t be some dumb dancing girl from Long Island.
Sometime between the Follies and that night in 1971, Phyllis Rogers grew up.
