The shop was empty of customers and nearly silent, but he heard the rustle of a page turn and glanced towards the sound. A slight young man was reading at the counter. He was absorbed in his book, sitting erect and still, head gently bent. It appeared that he had not noticed Sam come in, so focussed was he on his book. His black cable knit sweater was a little too large and was showing an inch or two of bare shoulder. A lock of hair had fallen from behind his ear. His hands were small and delicate. His lips made an unconscious soft pout, perhaps in response to his reading.
Sam found himself soothed by the peace of this place, and the young man in it. He stood and watched him quietly for a moment. He resolved to make a quiet exit, feeling the urge to preserve this calm and not intrude on it further.
He turned to leave, and in his haste knocked over a careful arrangement of books. He winced at the crash, and turned to see the man look up, flushing at the interruption to his solitude. Sam’s heart was so loud he was afraid the man could hear it. He was looking straight at him, eyes wide.
