REGENCY MASH-UP -- This is a mash-up of both Sherlock (TV) and ACD's Sherlock set in the Regency Era. John in this fic is Lord Saughton, as the only remaining Alpha of his line (that's eligible for the title), and Sherlock an Omega that comes from a Nouveau riche family (emphasis on RICH). John had not expected to inherit at all, but he has no choice. Not only is he drawn away from the war, but he's also kept from marrying Mary Morstan (an infertile Beta) because he needs to bear an heir. There's also the fact that his brother, the late-Earl of Saughton, James, had run the Saughton name to the ground with his gambling habits before his death. And so, in order to put things back in order, John is forced to either sell everything or marry into a rich family. Fortunately for him, opportunity comes knocking in the form of Mycroft Holmes, who is looking for an Alpha for Sherlock (who is still a consulting detective here but is quite limited because of his second gender. [The fic is actually pretty widely arching. There's the political intrigue and the family drama that comes with the era. There are also the tonnes of cases (some in detail some not) that Sherlock and John work on. And there's the underlying tension of more to come with Moriarty. Relatively light-hearted though and well-researched!]

THOUGHTS -- I have to admit, I didn't think I'd like this at first. I'm not a fan of historical romance fics, in general. But well. I figured I'd give it a shot, and I'm so glad I did! Because this fic is so much more than that. The romance between Sherlock and John does, of course, feature here. But it's definitely not the center focus. It's just their life in general. There are family matters to think about. Matters of the state. Cases. And, of course, Moriarty. It's a very... complete (I guess is the best way to describe it) picture of their lives. I think the author was also pretty ingenious when it came to translating canon events into this era. They took more than a few creative liberties -- all of which reinvigorated the story as we knew it, while still staying true to the core of the material. Also-- I'm not familiar with the era at all, but the amount of detail the author packed into this story? Whoo boy... I bet that must have taken a lot of research. I can only imagine the effort that took. I also really liked the ABO elements here. It's very understated but powerful. At first, it might seem like it's really only there so that Sherlock and John can marry. But, it's much more than that. The author does a good job tying it together with the rest of the plot. A small thing to some maybe, but it certainly made the story a lot more consistent. Of course, the actual characters are nothing to scoff at either. They are slightly OOC to match the era, of course. But, just like with the plot. The author does a great job of making sure that they stay true at the core.

All in all? I have nothing but praise for this fic. It's definitely a favorite. If you're looking for something a little bit more than your average romance and don't mind that it kind of goes of the rails sometimes (a consequence of the 'completeness' of the story) with cases (I'm not really a fan of cases in fics. Especially ones that have no bearing on the plot. Most of the ones here do, the rest? I'm not sure. But I'm hoping to figure that out the next time around) then this is definitely a fic to read. Personally, I think I'll be coming back to this story a lot in order to enjoy the universe again. I'm a fast reader, so I can't say that I really understood everything the first time around -- but I'm sure I'll like it even more then. (Note for future me: Read it slower and ignore the underlying tension. The author teases the main conflict of the story, frequently, for quite a while, but it really isn't featured all that much. So, it's better to focus on the fic as a whole rather than wait for things to crash and burn -- because it takes a while before that happens (literally, not till the end).)

1ST REREAD THOUGHTS — There was a power outage at my house and I had only the main story of this available to read at the time. So I ended up reading it sooner than I thought I would! I only read half this time (the power came back on LOL), but I took my advice and read it much slower. This is just me dropping by to say that this is definitely worth the read! I would have kept reading if I wasn’t already eyeing another fic before starting it! But I’ll definitely pick it up again next time (I stopped at Ch. 35 this time around).
