Bucky Barnes grows up with two best friends he loves more than anything. One is Steve Rogers, who Bucky can't have and shouldn't want. The other is a little pony who no one else can hear, touch or see. Not even Steve, no matter how much Bucky wants him to.
Bucky learns quickly that the only thing you can really expect is disappointment, and he gets used to ignoring what he wants. But he has his best friends, and that's good enough.
He knows he's lucky.
But in our world there's no such thing as magic, and friendship can't stop a war.
(When Bucky thinks about it years from now, he won't remember why his father was angry, or why he was crying, or why no one came to look for him. But he'll remember crying on the steps and he'll wonder anyway, because he was just six, but mostly because he was sad and afraid and alone.
But he will always, always remember the moment when he lifts his little head because he has a feeling someone's watching him, and is suddenly looking into the apple-green eyes of an astonishingly small horse.)

Oliver Queen and James Buchanan Barnes have a lot in common.
("He's not actually a veteran," Felicity said at last, then looked up, worried. "But what happened to him…he was a prisoner of war. He'd tell you that's not true, but, from what little he's told me…yeah." She rubbed her nose, then re-clasped her hands and lowered her eyes. "And he was tortured," she went on softly. "For a long time. They trained him to fight. Made him…made him do things." She bit her lip. "Awful, terrible things that no one should do to anybody. But he did. And it…it changes you. When you have to do that."
Sam cleared his throat. "Yes it does." His voice creaked anyway, but it was a little hard to speak normally when his heart was suddenly going like he'd been trying to lap Steve Rogers. "This friend of yours," he went on, trying not to sound eager. "What's his name?")

Sergeant Barnes was the only viable Winter Soldier. But he was far from the only person Hydra fucked with.
(Claire's seen a tube like that before. Probably everyone in the entire country has by now. The 'special issue' of Time Magazine that came out in December is still on the table in the break room. Its cover looks like it was painted in the 1940s, and its title is The Crucible of Bucky Barnes.
She didn't read it, but she looked at the pictures. She knows damn well what this green cylinder is for.)

Napoleon Solo meets Bucky Barnes in 1945. He's the only one who knows it's the first and last time.
(He was fairly certain there were other Clairvoyants who were able to change the future, not just be intimately aware of it. Napoleon was not one of them. Nothing he ever did mattered a good God damn to fate. If it was meant to happen, it would. He'd learned that the hard way, but he'd never forgotten it.)

Ernesto Jiménez meets Bucky Barnes in Bucharest in 2016, and offers him a job.
But first he meets him in Kreischberg in 1943 and saves his life.
(Defiance would fade. Ernesto was painfully aware of that. And when defiance faded, the will followed. And after that there could only be death, of one kind or another.
In roughly two weeks and fourteen hours, Steve Rogers' defiance would create Captain America, reborn in the ashes of this Godforsaken prison. But Ernesto was well acquainted with death; had seen—had caused—more then enough of it for several lifetimes. He'd seen the prisoners in Huesca and could tell which of them would live to cry and rant and endure another day. And which would not.
Barnes' defiance was fading, and when it died, so would he. He might not last two more weeks and fourteen hours.)
