Blue is Kanto Champion for thirty-nine minutes.
That’s it. Technically, he’s part of the Hall of Fame, technically he’s an accepted Champion. Technically, the title was his once, so it will always be his. Technically, he can’t lose it. He just loses being the present Champion.
He also, briefly, held the Kanto record for youngest ever Pokemon League champion. That was until Red, three months younger, caught up to him.
Really, Blue hadn’t even been surprised.
Blue loses the Championship, Red disappears up a mountain, and everything that happens afterwards.

‘Uh, look, I don’t want to be the downer here, but are you sure he’ll even appreciate this?’
Red’s Mom stared at Blue, the kind of million-yard gaze both her and her son were such experts in.
‘It’s Winterstar,’ she said simply, tone completely calm, but her grip tightened on the gift in her hands, crinkling the paper. She glanced down, smoothed down the wrapping, and then thrust it into Blue’s hands.
‘I don’t think my son would enjoy being alone on Winterstar,’ she said, simply, ‘Even he doesn’t like his solitude that much.’
Blue sighed, running a hand through his hair. He didn’t come back from Kalos for winter break for this. Running around delivering Red his care packages wasn’t exactly his idea of a good time.
Blue visits Red over the holidays.

‘I swear, I will only be gone for two hours.’
Daisy stares at her little brother, and can see he's not convinced. He’s doing what he thinks is his most winning smile - the one he used to practice in the mirror as a kid - and that means he’s nervous. She isn’t sure if Red is too, but she never knows what's going through his head.
‘Just. Isn’t M around to babysit?' Blue asks, rubbing a hand through his hair, ‘This is more her scene.’
Daisy rolls her eyes, bouncing her daughter in her arms.
‘Masami has been helping me practice! She wants to see me up there. Besides, she always babysits,’ she says. She’s sure that Blue just thinks Red’s mother is some kind of Ultra-Mom with no interests outside of babying people. From his perspective, that probably seems true, but only because he requires so much babying.
Blue babysits his niece.

Blue wasn’t often awake before Red. Red was usually out of bed at 5am sharp, off to do his morning training regime. He would run himself and his Pokémon ragged for two hours exactly before returning to shower, drink a protein shake, set up a percolator of coffee, and wait for Blue to stagger out of bed, whining for caffeine. There were rare exceptions, but that was usually the routine.
This was one exception.
Blue woke up at 4:12am with something horrible travelling from his gut to the back of his mouth, a headache that felt like a steel bar being wrapped around his skull, and a throat so dry he was sure he hadn’t seen a fluid in twenty years.
Stumbling out of bed, he rushed to the ensuite, dropping to his knees and emptying what felt like the entire contents of his body into the toilet.
Blue is sick, Red is dealing with it.

‘Are you sure you’ll be okay by yourself for a few weeks?’
It’s the fifteenth time Blue has asked, and it’s starting to get on Red’s nerves. Something must show on his face, because Blue waves a hand, sighing.
‘It’s not that. I know you can take care of yourself,’ he shrugs, and then rests a hand gently on the cast on Red’s leg, ‘It’s this.’
Red glances down, frowning. His frown deepens at the signatures scrawled across the plaster – he’d initially tried to stop people from doing it, didn’t like the messiness, but a couple of the Battle Tree regulars did it anyway. As always, people really didn’t get ‘no’. Eventually, he gave in.
Even though Blue signed last, he managed to take up the most space.
‘I can cancel,’ Blue offers, again, but his heart is not in it. He’s been looking forward to this. They’ve been looking forward to this.
The plan had been Kalos, for four weeks. Blue had gotten an invitation to take part in a research tour, an expedition of the mountains. Naturally, Red had been immediately invited, with the plan to extend the expedition to a more personal tour of the country afterwards.
Then, Red broke his leg.
Blue goes away for a few weeks.
