Oh, Author, I don't mind in the least that it's sad, it's so lovely! This feels right and very much like the (or at least a) true version of the events. I totally believe in this Billie Joe, big and strong and quiet and moody and with more emotion than he really understands or knows what to do with (that scene where he basically emotionally blackmails the narrator into kissing the baby goodbye I thought was really superb; it so clearly shows his depth of feeling and how she can't quite get it, and how maybe she's the better or at least the better off person because of that). And I love the narrator as well, that she's smart and practical and thoroughly understands the world she's living in. I so strongly sympathise with her anger, as well, it really makes the story for me that she can love him and mourn for him and still feel (quite rightly) that he's done her wrong and she can't forgive him. Beautiful story, thank you so much for writing it for me!
I'm so glad you liked it. I never write for music fandoms but I've loved this song for most of my life and when I saw it was nominated, I took a risk and put it on my offer list and I did. I enjoyed writing this a lot and I felt a lot of joy when I read the details in your letter since they were so in line with my own feelings about this song. I love writing strong women and this one was a real joy to create.
