Comment on Upcoming changes to kudos

  1. Seems to me that if you want people to leave more comments, you should be addressing your complaints to people who think some sorts of happy comment aren't good enough and who want to make sure only the sorts of comment they like get left. Not to people who aren't likely to comment regardless of fannish culture around the matter, and who would like to be able to convey their appreciation to the creator in some manner, however small.

Honestly, the main difficulty I have with this advice is that I (and I suspect, others as well) have personally never seen these complaints about certain types of comments that seem to be so rampant. The closest I’ve seen is just writers occasionally mentioning they wish they could get more substantial comments than just “Update plz!!!11”, which I think is a perfectly understandable and valid want. So to me, the type of confrontation you’re suggesting seems like it would it an overreaction.

These authors that you and others have mentioned as setting up rules for commenting or berating readers for leaving the “wrong” kind of comments aren’t something I’ve ever encountered in fandom before, and because of that, there’s really no way for me to address or correct their approach in any meaningful manner.

      1. Thank you! I thought I must have been very sheltered or naive to have never seen the super exacting demands and specifications from authors that others are reporting here, so I'm glad it's not just me.

        1. One thing I don't know is if people saw those very exacting demands on notes associated to the fics, or if they saw it on ranting posts on authors' blogs and/or twitter accounts (or other social medias). Maybe it comes into play?

          1. Huh, I hadn't considered that! That's a really good thought, maybe that's where this is coming from.
