Comment on Upcoming changes to kudos

  1. I’d like that feature, too, since your name is affixed to anything you approve. If you see fit to give kudos to a fic that’s going well and in the next chapter it turns into a pedo smut fic, you’re hosed. Not everyone uses the provided tags and warnings to full effect.

I read one a while back that said it was mature and that was it. Left kudos before I read all the way through to find out there’s explicit sex scenes. I favor a cleaner image on the site and don’t like my name on the kudos list, but that’s a lesson to me... Wait until the end before hitting that button.

But if a work gets orphaned and picked up by someone gross, there your name is. There really should be a take back option, even if it means my own kudos would be gutted, lol. It says to leave kudos if you like the work... nowhere does it tell you to think before doing it because you could end up on a list of people who apparently liked something that turns savage and gross in later chapters.

That's not how orphaning works. Once it's orphaned, it's perpetually listed as authored by "orphan_account", and no one can get control over the work anymore. Someone might copy the text of the orphaned work you previously kudosed to a new work, I suppose, and add something you don't want to kudos after the part you kudosed originally, but your handle wouldn't be in the new work's kudos list until and unless you kudos the new work.

…that explains so much about feedback ratios for works with sexual content. I have learned a thing today.

Ohhhh yeah. Posting any smut that is either very dark or has weird kinks = RIP your (public) Bookmark count. We can thank Tumblr culture for that. *shakes cane*

      2. Ok, thanks... I thought orphaned works could be picked up and taken over as is. I’m glad to know it isn’t that way.

    2. ...why not just, not leave a kudos until you've finished reading?

      1. Well, as I said, that’s what I plan to do in the future... wait until the end. But the reason why it’s a problem? As you can see in these comments, people are pretty possessive of their kudos. Some even want them by the chapter.

And there are times when the feedback on your first chapter is what keeps you writing. Now, ideally people comment, but some can’t or won’t. The kudos are in place as an alternative way to encourage the writer.

And few fics are posted that are already complete. So if you withhold kudos until the end, it can be months or years until you leave any. Some fics are never completed. So they’d get none at all.

All because of writers who can’t be bothered to indicate what kind of fic they’re writing.

I get that sometimes new things develop and tags change. It’s why I think we need the ability to remove kudos. I’m sure some of my past readers wish they could, lol.

Sounds like another good reason for leaving comments. You can always delete your own comments if you feel the need.

      1. Very true. We like them better anyway. It does take some courage to do it for some of us but it’s better in every way.
