Comment on Important changes to adding work, chapter, and series co-creators

  1. This happened to me when a friend decided to leave a fandom - she deleted all the works we had done together, without warning. There was no way for me to stop it or even save the works.

      1. I am horrified of that happening and I always urge my co-author if they are to leave writing to just remove themselves from the work instead of deleting it. And it is incredibly a dick move.

        1. Agreed. I have a few collab fics I've done with past friends I'm no longer friends with, but I still love the fics we have done together. They haven't yet, but I'd very much dislike it if they suddenly deleted our collab(s). FOr that reason, I download a copy of all my fics so I still have a copy should something ever happen to it.
Personally if I no longer want my name on an old fic, I talk to my co-writer about it first. if they want to keep the fic up, then I just remove myself from it and let it stay on their page. Or I just do that right away if I have no contact with them anymore.

          1. Well any fiction that is deleted, the author of said fiction gets a copy email to them. Honestly I'm of the mindset that if you willingly and knowingly remove yourself from a fiction as an author you're giving up all rights to that work, actually right now I'm dealing with that particular scenario. Not that you in particular care but maybe someone of importance will come across this post on here. So I co-wrote a fiction with two OC's Nathan mine and Caleb my ex co-author's the work is of the not-safe-for-work variety and also contains not safe for work art. Now my co-author a while back was afraid of his Circle of Friends finding it I'm like okay don't delete it please I'm really proud of it it showcases my writing groups abilities and talents which he was apart of so he did the responsible thing and removed himself from the work giving up ownership and giving me total responsibility. But now months later he's come to me and ask me to remove the art, change a few descriptive features of his OC and also changed the name of his OC which he abandoned. And I thought about it and I have nothing against him personally but doing any of the things he asked would seriously compromise the quality of the fiction, hard work that again I am very proud of and am quite pleased with as is it would essentially ruin the fiction. So I simply told him no. And to be perfectly honest I was actually going to read it over again edit it a bit for grammatical errors throw on a few more tags and update the post date 2 let more people see it again. However in the context of him not wanting more people to see it I've decided not to do this because that would be a dick move and I don't want his friends to see it is that might ruin something for him I get it I just don't want to ruin my fiction but I also want as many people as possible to see my work. What's the point of working tirelessly painstakingly on a work of fiction having multiple beta readers look at over even sometime commissioning art for said piece just to have only a few people see it. But I digress and that's getting into a different subject.

    2. I think this is what happened to an author I was following. They just up and quit, deleting all their account, works and co-created works. I've been scouring the internet to find any trace of them.

This is why I've been downloading my favorite fics now.

As a Fandom Old who watched entire archives disappear in the bad old days before AO3, I was saving copies of my favorite fics long before AO3 made it so easy with a download button. :)

        1. Same - I have thousands of fics saved on my hard drive, all nicely organized. My fic database already has a good dozen links to fics that no longer exist online, sadly - but I at least still get to read them! (I really hate it when people delete things. Just orphan them or something!)

          2. I'm right there (blindly) with, so don't feel bad! I only noticed the download button about 2 months ago... I've been reading on AO3 for several-times-longer than that. X'D

I'm so sorry that happened to you. Now I'm kind of terrified of that happening to all the co-creator works I've done. I don't think anyone I've collaborated with is that evil, I like to think they'd just remove themselves from the work, but I guess you never really know someone, do you.

      1. I co-created a gift for a mutual friend and when my co-creator and giftee had a falling out the work was deleted. I suppose they don’t have to be evil to ragequit!

I feel bad, but this is why you keep a backup copy so you can copy and paste it just to make them feel stupid about even trying yoU MEAN PERSON WHO DID THAT
Ok but in reality I do feel bad. But that’s just a tip I have.
