Summary
Each flicker of existence only happening every other week, every other month. Sometimes occurring day after day, while in others six months would pass in the second it took to breath. He didn’t even have a name, then, just the seconds of being. It took forever to think, to do more then just breath, to finally have a name.

Summary
There is a moment where Jake Lockley reconsiders. Until he doesn't.
"I sense hesitation in you. It is... unfamiliar to me."
"Yeah well, I'm just full of surprises, aren't I?" He pulls a pack of cigarettes from the breast pocket of his jacket, takes one out and holds it between his fingers. Considers it for a moment, the bright white between two pillars of black. "Thought that was the point."

Layla sees Jake. Then she sees him.

"What's your name?"His eyes finally find hers in the mirror, his brow raised. The brown of his irises are black in the low light. "Getting personal, now, are we?"
She tightens her jaw at that, but she doesn't snap back at him like she wants to. She can't afford to be confrontational. At least not recklessly so.
"Lots of cab drivers get personal," she offers with a shrug, sitting back against her seat.
"Not this one."

Today wasn’t supposed to go like this. They knew this would be hard, they all did, but he and Steven had apparently hammered everything out over the course of several days. There had been discussions and agreements and arguments. The only thing lacking was notarized signatures, Marc had joked, and in retrospect, Layla realized how incredibly naive she’d been to assume that Marc could crack jokes about a topic as serious as this one was a positive step. But of course, nothing was ever that easy.
Maybe he and Steven should have made their agreement legally binding, though how anyone could ever enforce that, she would never know.

Summary
David didn’t always bring Syd with him into the white room. It felt incredibly rare to have a moment to himself with nothing to do, and while he did prefer to spend a lot of his time with Sydney, he also treasured these moments alone. David was able to think clearly for the first time in his life. No one else's thoughts hammering on his head, no drugs blurring his senses. Just simple peace and quiet.
David was not very sure what to do.
