The birds' plumage was typically shades of gray, ranging from deep stone to misty silver. If you were privileged to be able to watch one for any length of time, you could see patterns like clouds race across pale feathers. Very rare specimens might have feathers edged in the blue of a bright and cloudless sky. His brother had asked him to paint one of those.
