Jukebox 2015 is a challenge for fanfic writers, podfic artists, and visual artists. In previous years, it included fanfiction only. Jukebox is based on a theme of songs and music videos, and it uses a gift exchange structure, like Yuletide and many others. When you sign up, you will give several prompts using songs for inspiration, and you will commit to writing a story, creating a piece of art, or recording a podfic for a recipient who will be assigned to you.

What's this fest about?
Ask for a song and receive a story (written or recorded) or a piece of art.

The goals of this fest are:

  • Create a piece of art, record a story, or write a story
  • Receive a story recorded or written for you, or receive a piece of art
  • Share and learn about music
  • Read and comment on many creative interpretations of song narratives.

What’s the schedule of the fest? [In NZ time, which is probably ahead of yours]
Brainstorming: late March
Nominations: 29 March to 4 April
Sign-ups: 6 April to 16 April
Assignments go out by: 18 April
Assignments due: 4 June
Collection opens: 7 June
Authors revealed: 11 June

What do I need if I want to sign up?
You need an account at the Archive of Our Own. If you don’t already have one, you can ask for an invitation on the front page. They may take a couple of days to process. If you are a visual or podfic artist, you also need another space to host your work, as AO3 does not host those directly.

You need to commit to:

  • writing a story of at least 1,000 words, for a song you have offered, to match your recipient’s prompt, OR
  • creating an original piece of art of size 700 x 700 pixels (or up to 3 smaller pieces of equivalent area), for a song you have offered, to match your recipient's prompt, OR
  • recording a podfic of an existing story of at least 1,000 words, based on a music video or song, for which the author has granted permission to record, which reflects your recipient's prompts and avoids their Do-Not-Wants.

You can offer podfic only; art only; fanfic only; or any combination of media. You will have approximately six weeks to work on your assignment.

You need to keep an eye on official announcements at this fest’s Dreamwidth or Livejournal communities: http://jukebox-fest.dreamwidth.org and http://jukebox-fest.livejournal.com, respectively. You don’t have to have a DW or LJ account to do that, but it helps.

Can I participate in other ways?
Yes, you can beta (provide constructive feedback on) participants' stories, art, or podfic by signing up to be a beta. You can also sign up to be a pinch hitter (a writer who may pick up an assignment when the original writer has had to pull out of the exchange). I will post in the DW and LJ comms about these options.

You can look at the prompts, which will be available on AO3, and write, draw, or record treats. (These can be any length - the word/pixels requirements only apply to an assignment.) You can also read and comment on the works when they go live. Exchange participants tend to like comments. ^!^

Why songs?
A song can be only a few minutes long but describe a whole world. By running a fest based on song and music video canons, I want to take advantage of the rich inspiration a song can provide. I also want it to be as easy as possible for participants to (re-)acquire and consume a canon in order to write to a prompt.

Are there or aren't there fandoms in this fest?
Not in the sense of Pokémon or Naruto or Harry Potter, no. Songs and music videos are the only canons you can nominate or request in this exchange. Just as a song can include a whole world, participants are encouraged to focus on those worlds. This is not the exchange to request a Labyrinth fic using the themes of a David Bowie song, or an Iron Man fic set to a song that Tony Stark would listen to. For crossovers, I recommend you stick to songs that have been nominated for the exchange, and check that your recipient has asked for this kind of crossover.

What counts as a song?
A piece of recorded music that includes lyrics* (in any language) and is shorter than 20 minutes. This may include a video.

Songs nominated for this exchange must be widely available. Preferably, there will be a YouTube link, or a link on the artist's website, or another publicly accessible link. I will create a table of links and lyrics for use in the exchange.

The song must be able to stand on its own without reference to a longer work. I don’t object to people nominating songs from musicals or operettas – but if it would be necessary to understand the whole musical, or the whole operetta, in order to appreciate the piece, then that piece of music is not appropriate for this exchange.

Songs should generally be considered separately from their artists. Prompts should include musician RPF only if the song or music video can be considered to have an autobiographical or self-referential element. Similarly, people who appear in music videos are generally to be treated as characters, not as their real-life or RPF selves.

Covers by specific artists can be nominated separately.

You can either nominate a song on its own, or a song with an associated music video. It's possible to differentiate these when nominating on AO3.

Songs that don’t quite fit these requirements, but that fit the goals of the exchange, can be negotiated on a case-by-case basis.

*By request, I am willing to include programmatic music - music that does not have lyrics, but where the composer, performer, and audience can agree upon a strong narrative theme. Yes, that's a broad definition - if you have a piece you think suits that criteria, and suggest it to me, I am likely to agree. NB: If you are interested in requesting such music, I will ask you to provide contextual links (a wikipedia page would do) and ensure that your requests include at least one song that does have lyrics.

More about the nominations process
You don’t have to nominate any songs in order to sign up. But it’s a good idea to take part in nominations if you have specific songs you want to offer or ask for.

Nominating canons is done by filling out a form on AO3. I will post a guide and a link to the nominations form closer to the time. You can nominate a total of 6 songs or music videos.

More about signing up
When you sign up, you can make between 3 and 8 requests for the type of gift you'd like. Art and fic requests must be based on the available (nominated) pool of songs and music videos. There is a space to enter a prompt for each song you request, so you can give your mystery writer an idea of what kind of story or picture you’d like.

Podfic requests will be based on your preferred themes, tropes, or ideas; you are also welcome to list existing stories you would like to receive as a podfic. These will act as suggestions, rather than requirements, for any podfic artist assigned to you. Please also tell your artist about ideas that you would like them to avoid (your Do-Not-Wants). You will need to tag your podfic requests "No Fandom" for the fandom and "Podfic" in the Additional Tags.

At least one of your requests must be for fic.

Some exchange participants also like to post a longer letter for their gift creator in a personal journal or similar. Feel free – that’s up to you.

Writers and artists must choose between 3 and 10 songs or music videos that you are willing to write for or create art for. If you are a podfic artist, you will select 'No Fandom' for your offers. Podfic artists, please also indicate tropes you like and dislike in your Offer optional details, so that I can try to avoid matching you with someone with wildly incompatible tastes. Writers and artists, since I am matching you on fandom, you don't need to bother with optional details in your offers.

Please tag each of your offers with "Podfic", "Art" or "Fic", (or "Fic" and "Art" for a song where you are willing to write or draw a work).

You will be assigned someone who has asked for at least one canon and media type that you have offered. You must write them a story of 1,000 words or more, based on any of their fic prompts, or create for them a piece of original art of 700 x 700 pixels minimum (or up to 3 pieces of equivalent area), or record them a podfic of 1,000 words or more that reflects their prompts and avoids their Do-Not-Wants.

If none of your recipient’s requests are things you actually offered, email the mod account (jukebox.mod@gmail.com) and I will sort this out.

More about your assignment
Please keep your assignment a secret while you are working on it. All creators will be marked Anonymous on AO3 until 4 days after the works have been made available. Not knowing who’s created what is a traditional part of this kind of exchange.

However, podfic artists may include their name in the header of their actual recording, and visual artists may include a small watermark on their art.

For this fest, you are strongly encouraged to get your work checked over by a beta before you submit it. I will make a post for volunteer beta readers in the LJ and DW comms.

Something may come up for you during the exchange period and you will realise you can’t fulfil your assignment. If you need to drop out, email Morbane at jukebox.mod@gmail.com, or click the Default button that is visible on AO3 next to your assignment. I understand. Do please let me know as soon as you know, because that makes it easier to find someone to write your assignment instead. You're also still expected to comment with thanks on any gift you receive, if you can.

When you sign up, you're committing to creating a gift for another participant. This may be
-an original story of 1,000+ words,
-a podfic of 1,000 words that is based on a song and whose author has given permission for it to be recorded
-a piece of original art of dimensions 700x700 pixels, or up to three separate pieces whose total is an equivalent area.

In turn, you will receive a gift.

Nominations and the tag set
Your fic and art offers must be based on songs in the 2015 tag set.

Nominations for this tag set run between 29 March and 4 April. You do not have to nominate any songs in order to sign up. However, you may nominate up to 6 songs and music videos. Once you have submitted nominations, you are encouraged to comment on the Jukebox LiveJournal or Dreamwidth communities, or to email jukebox.mod@gmail.com, with the details of your nominations. This helps a lot with my data entry.

You may make 3-10 offers. These offers can be any combination of fic, art, and podfic.

You may make 3-8 requests. These requests may consist of:
fic only
fic and art
fic and podfic
fic and podfic and art.

You may not request podfic only, art only, or podfic and art but no fic. This 2015 rule may be revised in 2016. The rule is in place because fic is the medium I, Morbane, am most familiar with, and I am concerned about covering pinch hits.

Podfic offers will work like this:

-Enter "No Fandom" in the Fandom field
-Tick "Podfic" in the Additional Tags
-Use the Optional Detail field to tell me some themes or things you're interested in podficcing, and what things you'd like to avoid.

If you only want to offer podfic, you can repeat this offer to get to the required minimum of 3 offers.

Fic and art offers will work like this:

-In the Fandom field, enter a song or music video (from the tag set) that you're willing to draw or write for
-Tick "Art" or "Fanfiction" in the Additional Tags (or both, if you're willing to create either)
-Please do not use the Optional Detail field for your fic or art offers.

Podfic requests will work like this:

-Enter "No Fandom" in the Fandom field
-Tick "Podfic" in the Additional Tags
-Use the Optional Detail field to tell your gift creator what kind of story you're interested in receiving as a podfic. You are welcome to suggest specific stories you would like to receive. They must be based on songs, not other fandoms. Please also list your Do-Not-Wants, or themes you want your podfic artist to avoid. Your podfic artist must abide by your Do-Not-Wants. They will take your other prompts as suggestions.
-You may also link to an external Dear Creator Letter, if you have written one.

You may repeat this request so that it makes up two of your requests, as long as your third request is a fic request.

Fic and art requests will work like this:

-Enter a song or music video from the tag set in the Fandom field
-Tick "Art" or "Fanfiction" in the Additional Tags (or both, if you're interested in receiving either)
--Use the Optional Detail field to tell your gift creator what kind of art or fic you're interested in receiving. Please also list your Do-Not-Wants, or themes you want your writer or artist to avoid. Your gift creator must abide by your Do-Not-Wants. They will take your other prompts as suggestions.
-You may also link to an external Dear Creator Letter, if you have written one.

If you choose to write a Dear Creator letter, please ensure it is complete and unlocked by 18 April.

You will receive your assignment on or before 18 April.

You must create one fanwork of a medium & fandom requested by your recipient. It is a gift for them, so try to create something they would like, and please abide by their Do-Not-Wants.

If you accidentally receive an assignment that does not match your offers - for example, you offered All Along the Watchtower - Art, and they requested All Along the Watchtower - Fic - please email Morbane at jukebox.mod@gmail.com and I will look into this at once.

Please do not talk publicly about your assignment.

Your fanwork is due:
Thu 4 Jun 1pm NZST
/Wed 3 Jun 9pm EDT
/Thurs 4 Jun 1am UTC.

Please post it to this collection by that time.

You are encouraged to get feedback on your work, such as from a beta reader, before submitting it, but this is not mandatory.

Podfic artists and visual artists must host their work somewhere away from AO3 and embed it in the gift they submit.

If you realise you cannot complete your assignment, please default immediately.

If you do not complete an assignment, you are not guaranteed to receive a gift.

You can default on the exchange by pushing the "Default" button on your assignment on AO3, or by emailing me at jukebox.mod@gmail.com.

You do not need to give me a reason for defaulting.

Defaulters are welcome to sign up to Jukebox in future as long as they comment with thanks for any gift they receive.

You are encouraged to post treats, of any length or size, as gifts in the collection.

If you post a full-size treat for someone, and their original creator defaults, that treat will not become the recipient's main gift unless you give me permission for this to happen.

Please comment to say thank you for any gift you receive.

If there is a problem with your gift, please email jukebox.mod@gmail.com and I will do my best to sort it out.

The gifts will go live before the creator names are revealed on AO3. Please don't publicly discuss which fics, artworks, or podfics you created until creator names are revealed.

Podfic artists may include their name ("read by....", etc) in the body of the podfic.
Graphic artists may include a small watermark in their art.

Please email jukebox.mod@gmail.com (Morbane) if you have any concerns, confusions, or catastrophes. I am happy to hear from you.
