The Shore Never Forgot Us

Summary:

The ocean is the only place that never changes.

That’s why they keep meeting there.

Naruto doesn’t know why it feels like the shore remembers more than it should.

He just knows he always ends up coming back.

I just know I’m gonna love witting this fic. Also I really want this fic to leave an emotional impact on the reader and the fic not just being entertainment but I also want it to have depth and have a leaving impact so I hope I can write it in a way that would make it the way I intend it to.

Chapter 1: Something like a promise

Chapter Text

The shore always looked the same from a distance.

Naruto noticed that first, before anything else.

No matter how many times he came down the path that cut through the low grass and scattered rocks, the ocean never seemed to change its mind about how it looked at him. Wide. Unbothered. Endless in a way that didn’t ask permission.

The wind pulled at his jacket as he stepped out onto the sand, like it already knew his name and was deciding whether or not to keep it.

He slowed a little, letting the sound of the water fill the space around him.

He wasn’t early.

Or late.

Just… first.

Naruto shoved his hands into his pockets and looked out at the horizon, squinting slightly as the light broke across the surface of the sea. The tide was pulling back, leaving thin lines of foam behind like something had written and erased itself too quickly to read.

He didn’t know why he kept coming here.

Or maybe he did, and just didn’t want to say it properly.

A sound came from behind him.

Footsteps in sand—steady, unhurried.

Naruto didn’t turn right away.

He already knew who it was.

“You’re early,” Sasuke said.

Naruto glanced back over his shoulder, a small grin tugging at his face. “You’re late.”

“I’m not late.”

“Yeah? Then what do you call that?” Naruto tilted his head slightly toward the empty stretch of beach. “I’ve been here for like—” he paused, exaggerating, “a while.”

Sasuke walked past him without answering properly, stopping closer to the water. Like he’d been pulled there instead of choosing it.

Naruto watched him for a second before following.

The ocean noise filled the gap between them.

It always did that. Like it didn’t care if they spoke or not.

Sasuke stood still, looking out at the waves. Not tense. Not relaxed either. Just… there, like he belonged more to the silence than the conversation.

Naruto nudged the sand with his foot. “You always come here first.”

“I was already here,” Sasuke said.

“Same thing.”

“It isn’t.”

Naruto let out a small laugh, but didn’t push it further. Instead, he looked out at the water too.

It was calmer up close. Less endless. More real. For a moment, neither of them spoke.

Then Sasuke spoke, still looking out at the water. Not like he was addressing Naruto. More like he was thinking out loud and didn’t bother stopping it.

The shore never forgot us.”

Naruto blinked. “Huh?”

Sasuke didn’t react. Didn’t explain. His eyes stayed on the waves like the sentence had already dissolved into them.

Naruto frowned a little, glancing from Sasuke to the ocean. “That’s… a weird thing to say.”

Silence answered him instead.

Sasuke didn’t correct it. Didn’t take it back either.

Like it didn’t really belong to the conversation in the first place.

The wind shifted, pulling the sound of the waves closer for a second, then letting it drift back out again.

Naruto sat down in the sand without really thinking about it. Sasuke stayed standing for a moment longer, then slowly lowered himself a short distance away—not too close, not far either.

Just enough.

Naruto leaned back on his hands. “So… we’re actually doing this, huh?”

Sasuke glanced at him.

“This,” Naruto continued, gesturing vaguely toward the beach between them. “Coming back here.”

“We said we would,” Sasuke replied.

Naruto hummed. “Yeah. I guess we did.”

The silence returned, but it wasn’t uncomfortable. It never really was, not here.

The ocean kept moving like it had somewhere to be, even though it never actually left.

Naruto watched a wave break and slide back into itself. “It’s kind of weird,” he said after a while.

“What is?”

“This place.” He paused. “Feels like it’s… already used to us.”

Sasuke didn’t answer immediately.

When he did, it was quiet.

“Maybe it is.”

Naruto didn’t ask what he meant.

Instead, he just looked back out at the water again, letting the words sit somewhere between them without needing to hold them properly.

The sun dipped slightly lower, softening the edges of everything it touched.

Eventually, Naruto stood up and brushed sand off his hands.

“I should head back,” he said.

Sasuke nodded once. “Yeah.”

Naruto hesitated. “Same time next year?”

A pause.

Not a dramatic one.

Just enough to exist.

Sasuke looked at him for a moment longer than usual, then turned back to the water.

“Yeah” Sasuke said.

Naruto smiled. “Cool.”

He turned first.

Started walking back up the shore, leaving faint footprints that the tide would slowly take back without asking.

He didn’t look over his shoulder.

Not because he didn’t want to.

Just because it didn’t feel like anything would change if he did.

Behind him, the ocean kept moving.

And Sasuke stayed where he was.
