Criminal Minds does an amazing job of humanizing monsters and villianizing heroes and exploring the sometimes thin line between the two. This fic digs that, digs into that, in a wonderfully complex way.
It also understands the dynamic of the team--not just the current team, but the BAU, all of them, end stop. It understands the job they do and what they mean to each other and the profiling that consumes their lives. It understands the characters and the relationships between them.
I am reminded, incidentally (an under the table recc), of the fic Nature of the Game, which also explores what triggers the move to unsub. It's a question that I think the show is aware of, and one that I ask myself all the time.
Anyway, this is one of the few really amazing CM fics--one of few that I think really understands the nuances of the show.
