Pit Bull

Work Text:

White/Exley snippet from my notebook:

"That man had the strength of a goddamned pit-bull, let me tell you," it was Barnes, one of the rousters who worked the drunk-tank at the precinct.

They were talking about Bud White, Exley realized with a sudden flush to his face.

"He was a good man, kept Stenz around 'till... well..."

...and Exley hurried back upstairs, files in hand.

RETIRED (pensioned):
Wendell "Bud" White

The ID shot was a sour, grim black and white representation of everything that Exley had hated about the man; his thinly-veiled menace, thick neck and scowling brows. There was a spark of malice in the dark eyes.

The last time Ed had seen those eyes they had been drugged, docile and unfocused. When Bud had seen the medal around Exley's neck, he'd quirked a ghost of a smile. He'd shrugged his muscular shoulders as if to say "And I look like this?"
