Why are there not forty million, lengthy Continuum stories out there? Where are my Alec/Carlos? Do any exist at all? Is that pairing the last unicorn or something? I don't get it.

This story, however, I get totally and completely. Signe is an awesomely insightful and sensitive writer. She writes with such linearity, such clarity. One thing I've come to realize is that while her writing usually seems straightforward, that impression is misleading. With Signe, more is going on between and behind the lines, none of which the reader has to catch to still enjoy her stories immensely.

Nevertheless, she weaves in easter eggs: easy to miss because they're right out in the open. I'll be reading along and BAM! Signe will seamlessly, without fanfare, drop a pebble into the pond and the resultant ripples in the characters and story will suddenly make clear to me some quality about who and what they are that I've never before understood, but that Signe apparently grasped pretty much immediately.

What makes these moments of illumination in her stories even better is that she frames them, she prepares the stage and lays the groundwork. Only all of this legwork is all out in the open, looking like one foot placed before the other. That's true, I think, on one level. The surface impression/interpretation in and of her stories holds together tightly. But I can't help the feeling that most of the plot actually serves to frame the small jewels of insight she drops in her path, sort of comparable to how the metal in a ring serves as armature for the diamond.

Kiera/Kellog will never not be a fantastic, fascinating pairing. Probably the most self aware character on the show dovetailing with one of the most stubbornly oblivious. They suit one another so well. Kiera's logic and right angled world and Kellog's delight in the elliptical, his joy in connecting dots the majority of people in any time would pass by obliviously. Both characters are fiercely intelligent, driven -- and have vastly more in common than either would easily believe.

Signe gets all of that, along with a laundry list of commonalities and compatibilities that I would never have ferreted out on my own. This is a wonderful story written with great talent and subtlety. I hope she writes more Continuum.
