    Summary

Undercover after Reichenbach, tracking the snipers who threatened his friends, Sherlock has one thing left he can depend on: his mind. But when he faces making his first kill, alone among the mad excesses of Las Vegas, the pressure turns out to be greater than even he can endure without John beside him.

I'd forgotten just how affected i was from this when I read it almost a year ago. After listening to the podfic I instantly had to go back to this whole series and reread.

The speed of Sherlock's thoughts, the amount of details absorbed and then the amount of details lost due to relentlessly shifting moods and thought patterns is just stuning. I almost feel dizzy myself from this, from the instantaneous changes from high to broken voices and need.

"The Colt in his pocket presses against his thigh, symbolising one thing only now: return to John. Sherlock’s longing for this remains acute, although it has receded to bearable levels, the surfeit recycled into the hum of his heightened senses. The intensity of sensation eludes explanation, as Sherlock consistently declines emotion – a man who did not would have shaken apart when he fell from the rooftop, would have ripped and bled out at the seams – and yet it is . His moods have always plunged and soared, fuelling the work or prevented by force of will from hindering it, but never to this pitch of transformation."
