Sympathy For The Devil
It starts in Heaven. It always starts in Heaven. Right when God Dad creates the fourth Archangel. At first, Gabriel is a fluffy feathery thing. His three brothers care for him, they really do. Lucifer finds himself having a fondness for him, perhaps because the younger Archangel wants to be like him. He gives up without too much resistance – it’s not like he could fool Michael or Raphael, who can’t help but snort every time they see their brothers together.
This is happiness – perfection.
Then the other angels come. Everything is bright: the Archangels are here to teach to their siblings how to behave. In the same time, they still have their own bond. Michael and Raphael, Lucifer and Gabriel. This is where the divisions start. The older brothers modeling their little brothers in their image. Lucifer teaches lots of things to Gabriel – more than to anyone else. And Michael is doing the same with Raphael. It seems right, at this time.

Then, humankind is created. The rest is history.
Lucifer refuses to love the humans more than his Father. That’s all. How could he? They don’t deserve his love. Fights grow up between Michael and him. Gabriel can’t stand it – he leaves Heaven and hides on Earth. Lucifer feels betrayed – he and Gabriel have always been really close. Too much for Michael’s peace of mind. Raphael never cares – he knows what it’s like, to be in the Grace of another Archangel.
Lucifer is finally cast out of Heaven. This isn’t the worst – being put in the Cage was worst, especially with Gabriel still hiding.
He really starts to hate humankind now – more than ever. He will not forgive them – never.

Time flies differently in the Cage. This is boring. He creates Hell – funny way to make humans pay for what they did to him. He is quite of proud of his demons – he may find them funny when he is in his darkest mood.
He meets another people in Hell – the Four Horsemen, for example. The Erinyes stop from time to time to talk with him, at first – then, it’s just Tisiphone, the vengeful destruction. Her eyes are bleeding blood, all the time. She watches him struggling in his Cage and one day, finally tells him that “He misses you as much as you miss him”. She never comes back after.
He starts planning his revenge very seriously – he wants to see Gabriel one more time, in Heaven preferably. Truth is, he wants Gabriel at his side – it would mean that everything is fine, right? Forgiven.

He crosses the path of the Winchester brothers. He regrets it – it brings Gabriel’s death. He murdered Gabriel because of humankind. There’ll be no forgiveness for that. Someone is going to pay.

Choosing the Winchesters hasn’t really been Heaven’s greatest idea. In fact, not at all. The oldest brother was ready to let the world burn to save his baby brother – and with a smile, if it was worth it! And for Sam… Well, the boy wasn’t so much like him. Such a caring soul… He could have been a good angel – in another time and space.

Gabriel has chosen his side. This is why Michael and him were stuck in the Cage – again. Well, it was new for his big brother, but for him… The Morning Star didn’t appreciate it – and he makes Sam’s soul pay for that. Michael is willing to help him, this time – he sent his vessel’s soul back in Heaven as soon as the big “yes” has been pronounced.

Then, Sam is really and deeply gone. Death sighed when he picked up the soul, said hello to the Erinyes – who were back around the Cage, watching the Archangels with passion in their bleeding eyes – but didn’t bother talking with them.
There is only the silence now.
And Gabriel’s death between them.
“He would have never chosen between us.” is the only thing Michael manages to say.
Lucifer doesn’t answer. The silence is enough.
He still has his memories after all.
And maybe… maybe Dad will bring Gabriel back.
Maybe He will choose to reunite His family around Him.
Maybe.
