>Brian only realised it was a date when Vince pulled up outside a Mexican restaurant complete with those musicians that play at your table until you pay them to go away. He felt a bit awkward; he hadn’t dressed up; assuming when Vince asked him out for the night that they’d be in some dive bar on the strip playing pool and getting drunk; not sitting down to eat in a restaurant with table service. It was kind of a surprise and it took him until the main course to buy into the whole dating Vince thing.
Sure they’d had sex. He’d stayed over at Vince’s, Vince had stayed over in the bed he had at Harry’s and there had been that one memorable time at Dom’s house; but dating yeah that was something different.
They made small talk as they waited for their food; Brian asked how the team came about and Vince told about meeting Dom in the third grade. They were two only sons who found a brother in each other. Brian was fascinated. Vince told him about what it had been like when Dom’s father died and Dom went to prison; how he’d moved into the house for a while and kept food on the table. Mia had been 15. He’d only been 18 but he’d taken on that grown-ups responsibility because Mrs Toretto was as close to a real mum as he’d ever known and she was still struggling from losing her husband and her son in the same week.
As Vince talked Brian found himself appreciating some new things about him. Like the way his face softened when he talked about the Toretto’s and how he got passionate about music he liked and hated. When he talked about the team he got this look on his face that Brian decided he was gonna call content. Yeah there was something to be said for dating the guy you were sleeping with.
Vince paid for dinner; it was his invitation after all and Brian didn’t mind being treated like a chick this once, he said.
After they left the restaurant Vince drove them up into the hills and parked where they could look out over open countryside, they made love under the stars. It was definitely making love not fucking; Brian could tell the difference now and it wasn’t about who was on top; it was about how they knew each other and cared about what the other was feeling. And Brian knew if he explained that to anyone even Vince he’d have his licence to carry a dick revoked.
As the afterglow wore off they both got a little cold so they got dressed again and snuggle together under the blanket Vince carried in the trunk; it smelt a bit of oil but then so did they so they didn’t mind. Brian fell asleep n Vince’s arms watching the stars move across the sky. When he woke it was just before dawn and he could see Vince’s silhouette a few yards away.
He got up and went to sit next to him; dawn was breaking and as it did they watched it from the first hints that night was over to reds and oranges and yellows breaking through the clouds and as the whole majestic wonder that was the change from dark to sunlight happened around them he caught himself thinking, this is pretty close to heaven.
