    Who should have been a bride;
    But who for joys brides hope to have
    Fell sick and died.

    Fic based on Christina Rosetti's "The Goblin Market".

    "The Illusionist" explores a character who's only mentioned in Rossetti's poem--Jeanie, the eager bride-to-be who sickens from the goblin fruit. The worldbuilding and characterization are excellent; this is not only a brilliant revision of the original, but a powerful story in its own right. I think this story will work even if you don't know "Goblin Market"; I recommend it highly to everyone.

    A fantastic story that gives Jeanie Jean backstory and makes her into a person, not just an extra. Elements of magical realism lend a dark fairy tale feel to the story. The fox goblin is sublime. I loved it. (Written for me for Yuletide 2009.)

    Lovely, sad, full of careful observation. "Jean stared at him for a moment, and saw that the apple turned green as beech leaves every time it landed in his right hand, and red as blood when it landed in his left."
