When he arrives at the Pearson Hardman building the lights are dimmed and the floor is deserted. His feet carry him to Harvey's office even though he expects it to be empty. Because Harvey probably fled the city via helicopter or teleporter or sheer force of will. But when he approaches the office he can see that Harvey is there. He has moved the couch so that it now faces the floor to ceiling windows and Mike silently sits beside Harvey, joins him in looking down at the chaos engulfing the city below. [Apocalypse AU]
Mike has lived in New York all his life, so he's not unaccustomed to seeing famous people in real life. He once stood in line at a coffee shop behind Hugh Jackman. He saw Matt Damon at a restaurant once. One time he got into a cab that Anne Hathaway was exiting. He doesn't really get star struck. Except now apparently. Harvey Specter just walked into his shop and Mike's body is reacting, heart beating hard in his chest, breathing becoming more difficult.
Thankfully Mike is distracted from his minor freak out by someone attempting to rob him.
[or: Harvey is a famous actor who walks into the bookshop that Mike owns, and yes, this is exactly what you think it is.]
Mike knows that he’s staring, that his jaw has dropped from shock, and most ridiculously of all in the silence that follows Harvey’s declaration the only thing Mike can hear in his head is Mary Poppins’ voice saying close your mouth please, Michael, we are not a codfish.
So Mike makes the concerted effort to close his mouth, and then after a few more painfully awkward seconds Mike says, “I’m sorry, can you repeat that?”
Harvey sighs heavily. “I think we should get married.”
He would be lying if he said he wasn't tempted. Because he has known Mike for a grand total of twenty minutes and already knows that Mike would work hard, could excel if given the chance. And more than that, he likes this kid, his bravado and cheek, the way he can give back as good as he gets. And Harvey only expected to find someone he could tolerate; he never anticipated finding someone he actually liked.
But he can't do it. There are bigger things at play here. He would be betraying Jessica - she’s done so much for him, more than he could ever enumerate, and hiring someone with no degree is not a fine way to repay her. So as much as he wants to go back, to say, "You're hired, you start on Monday," he can't. He won't. Instead he says, "The coast is clear." [AU in which Harvey doesn't hire Mike in the pilot episode.]
Mike Ross is a teacher in a private school. Harvey Specter is the father of one of his pupils, 5-year old Eliott. They meet in his classroom.
