    Summary

'Eijun vaguely remembers his head tilting so it rests against the side of Miyuki’s head, vaguely remembers an exchange of "oi, go back to your own room if you're gonna sleep" and "I will. Like I'd want to fall asleep here", but he never manages to get up.

The next thing he knows his alarm clock is pulling him from sleep and he quickly turns it off, a reflex acquired to avoid Kuramochi's violent retribution for being woken at five in the morning. Which is when he realises he's not in his room, and there's no Mochi-senpai to watch out for.'

Stories about how late night conversations and sleep can bring two people closer.

So Kazuya shifts under the covers, and rests his arm under the other boy's head, across his waist, and can finally relax.

And immediately sleep settles in his limbs, heavy and so overwhelming he almost falls asleep then and there.

But Kazuya struggles to stay awake. Sawamura’s silence from earlier gnaws at him like an uncomfortable ache. And for the first time he finds that it's something he wants to talk about.

    "Sawamura?"

"Mm?" The pitcher mutters halfway to sleep.

"You know I don't brush you off because I want to, right? I have a set schedule with each pitcher that I have no power over."

There's a long pause and Kazuya wonders if he’s fallen asleep. But then Sawamura laughs. It's quiet and so unlike him, soft and drowsy.

"Thank you," Sawamura mumbles. He shifts closer to Kazuya, nose brushing his neck and arms tightening, removing the void between them. "But I got you now and I've no intentions of giving you back."

Kazuya opens his mouth to retort, but the words sink in and the selfish claim renders him breathless.

He's always known Sawamura loves to pitch, but he's never thought too deeply about it. He'd assumed the reason the southpaw always bugged him specifically had to do with his rivalry with Furuya, his desperation not to be left behind or forgotten in the obviousness of the other pitcher's talent. And he'd fuelled it, liked the attention.

Especially because there'd been a time when he hadn't been the one receiving that attention. He'd watched Sawamura pester Chris day in and day out to catch, and maybe somewhere deep in his heart Kazuya had wondered if he'd become the second choice; somebody Sawamura pestered because he couldn't have his first priority.

"Thinking you'll steal the ace number from Furuya, are you?" He teases, pulling his fingers through Sawamura's hair without really thinking too much about anything other than how soft it is and how much he wants to do it again.

    "Kazu."

The familial name catches him off guard but he's too tired to be surprised, limbs weighing him down, their shared warmth an effective lullaby. Instead he feels hot affection bleed from his chest, golden and sweet like honey.

    "Hm?"

"Shut up and go to sleep."

Sirius looked back down at Harry's drawings, realising that he'd just embarrassed his friend, and also that he was far more turned on by the intensity of Remus' amber-brown stare than a man ought to be when he was supposed to be playing at markers with his godson.

"What's that now?" he asked, as Harry drew a lopsided square in black, colouring the bottom a sandy tan shade. Harry uncapped a dark brown marker and drew a squiggle. Sirius was pleased that his voice didn't tremble.

"It's a...terr...arr...ium," Harry said carefully. "Professor Snape showed them to me."

    "And this?"

"That's a tree for the snake to crawl on."

    "The snake, eh?"

Harry nodded and drew a black lump in the corner. "An' that's a place for them to hide. Snakes like to hide."

    "Is the snake in there?"

"No," Harry said scornfully. "Where's the fun in that?"

Sirius heard Remus chuckle from the desk.

"Where's the snake going to be?" Sirius asked.

"Right here," Harry said, pointing to a little dent in the sand, beneath the squiggly tree. He looked up. "Remus, what colour should I make the snake?"

Remus glanced up from his paperwork, surprised. "I don't know, Harry."

"Well, what colours do you like?"

Remus considered the matter. "Red," he said finally. "And brown."

Harry nodded and selected a red marker. "I saw one that was white and red striped with Professor Snape."

Sirius watched as Harry finished the snake, drawing careful diamond patterns and a brown outline, and then tore the page out of the book of paper, standing and carrying it to the desk. He presented it gravely to Remus.

    "That's for you," he said.

Remus accepted the paper, perplexed. Sirius could see Harry's face, hopeful and growing worried. Remus' fingers traced the square of the terrarium, drifted up to a couple of small frogs in one corner of the page. Finally, he smiled.

"Thank you, Harry," he said. "It's great. I'll hang it on my wall."

"Next to the picture of the tree?"

Remus nodded. "Sure. I'll get a frame for it tomorrow."

    Summary

The functional Point Of Departure is that Lucius and Narcissa Malfoy have a child before Draco, and consequently their development is slightly different. By the time Draco meets Harry, he's realized the value of friendship and is more open of a person. The POD for Harry is when he meets Draco in Madam Malkin's robe shop. In TSH, unlike canon, he introduces himself to Draco. They shake hands and decide to be friends. They spend the next month before school exchanging letters, and on the train Harry is introduced to other children Draco knows. We see Ron and Hermione, but Harry doesn't interact with them. Things really deviate from canon when Harry is Sorted into Slytherin. The story is distinct from the many other Harry-in-Slytherin fics because it doesn't turn on Harry being sorted to Slytherin but rather on Harry becoming friends with Draco. This fanfic is an attempt to tell the big overplot of the Harry Potter series using the Slytherin characters.
