He did not judge me. I don't think he ever would. He was curious about me, asked me often what I was thinking.
"Of you," was all I usually admitted.
"Tell me something I don't know," he laughed.
There was nothing about me, I suspected, that could still be secret from him.
"You have offered me something desperately intimate," Graves sighed, sounding tired. "Do you understand that, Credence?"
Credence hesitated, choosing his words carefully. "I am naïve, Mr. Graves," he said, slowly. "But I am not deliberately obtuse."
"A very diplomatic answer," Graves replied, half smiling.

"Mr. Graves—" Credence started, at an easy lull in the conversation. "May I—may I take your arm?"
"Well," Graves said, his eyebrows raised almost imperceptibly. "Since you asked so charmingly."
March had his palm read once, years back, by a hack psychic in a gaudy tent at some old timey carnival Holly had begged to go to. She'd taken one look at his craggy hands – two fingers bandaged at the time - and told him, in no uncertain terms, that if he didn't slow down, boy, he was gonna hurt himself. He tipped her very badly.
Suffice to say, he did not often have the appearance of a man in control of his own destiny.

Graves gets to his knees. His palms slide down Credence's shoulders, to his chest, and Graves rests his head against the boy's thin belly, one ear to his stomach.
"There is nothing dangerous in you," he says. "Nothing at all."
