    Summary

The insight hits him like a taser to the torso, fifty thousand volts straight through his skin: Illya is afraid. Well, no, that’s not quite right. Illya is uncertain, and he doesn’t like to act unless he knows what he’s doing. Suddenly the stop-start with Gaby makes sense, the fumbles and flinches and eventual resignation that nothing would happen. Illya hates incompetence, hates it most in himself, and will never move to expose a weakness.

“Stand up,” Napoleon says again, and this time there’s a hint of a tremble in it. “And come here.”

It takes ten minutes to get Illya cleaned up, and after Napoleon throws the rag onto the table and stands up in a stretch, back arched and neck bared. When he looks back down Illya’s lips are slightly parted, just a little too slow to avert his eyes. Napoleon’s heart gives a distressing lurch; he can feel the thud of it somewhere deep in his stomach.

Two organizes her thoughts, finds her voice, as she comes to a decision. “From now on, I don’t care what happens between the two of you, but you will be paired up when need be. Other teams can change, but you’re permanent. We don’t need a repeat of what happened today.”

If looks could kill, One would be taking pot shots at her about now, and Three just looks like he’s mildly put out by the whole idea.

But, One’s hand hasn’t moved from Three’s arm, and Three’s fingers have found their way to fiddle with one of the holster straps at One’s thigh.

So, Two doesn’t need any affirmation to know it was the right choice.

"So, what did you do on your summer vacation?" General O'Neill said.

Rodney took a deep breath. O'Neill held up a hand, cutting him off, and looked at John.

John shrugged. "Killed some people. Got a tan."

"Sounds like my last trip," O'Neill said, tilting his head back. "Nice laser, by the way."

"Yes, isn't it?" Rodney said, beaming at it proudly. Raytheon had sent him off with a nice boxed prototype, a "sorry for the multiple kidnapping attempts" parting gift.

Granted, it wasn't so much Raytheon's fault that the Trust had decided to take a shot at snatching the foremost expert on Ancient technology while they had the chance. But since the existence of the Trust was classified, they couldn't tell Raytheon as much. John was feeling pretty philosophical about that, though.

Rodney was apparently feeling more than philosophical, given how he was stroking the barrel of the laser. John eyed him sidelong. It was kind of disturbing.

O'Neill apparently agreed. He clapped his hands together. "Okay! You crazy kids have until tomorrow morning before the Daedalus takes off. Get out of here."

"Yes, sir," John said, and took Rodney by the arm. "Come on, Rodney."

Rodney said distractedly, still clinging to the laser, "I was just going to run a few—"

    "Rodney," John said meaningfully.

It was pretty fun to watch the Pavlovian way Rodney immediately jerked his head up from the laser and started staring at John instead, his face going all pink and flushed, except for how it was happening in front of a general. O'Neill had his eyebrows raised.

John gave him a very fake smile. "We'll be leaving now, sir," he said, dragging Rodney away rapidly.

"I'm telling you, this kind of thing doesn't happen when you go fishing!" O'Neill yelled down the hall after them.

Then he goes in for the kill: his lip quivers and he sniffs mournfully. 'Is this was a joke for you,' he says, in a tone of voice he should probably reserve for people who stomp on puppies, 'it was very cruel.'

There's silence. Steve thinks the best way to finish this would be for a single manly tear to roll down his cheek or something. Maybe he should teach himself to cry on command. It could be useful in the field.

Still, everyone looks shamefaced and completely crushed. Serves them right.

Which, of course, is when the bedroom door opens and Bucky walks out, barefoot and trying to muffle a yawn, wearing nothing but a pair of jeans that cling to him by a thread. There's a very unmistakable trail of hickeys running up his neck. He squints at the Avengers dubiously, and when he passes Steve he snaps the waistband of his boxers. Steve laughs and, smirking, lets his eyes trail after Bucky; those jeans are pretty mindblowing.

He turns back to the speechless and gawking Avengers.

'You,' Bruce chokes out, pointing an accusing finger. 'That's — oh my god. You just played us. You lying liar. Captain America can't lie!'

'There's a lot you probably think Captain America can't do,' Bucky calls from the kitchen.

'I actually started to pity you,' says Tony. He winces, and clutches at the reactor in his chest. 'What is this feeling? What's happening?'

Steve sighs. 'It's called guilt, Tony.'

Tony gasps in horror. 'You monster.'

    Summary

In his 2009 book on Captain America comic books, war photography, and American propaganda, Everett claims: “There is nothing to suggest that either the graphic novels issued during the war or the photographs taken during Rogers’ stay with the Howling Commandos can serve as a basis for a queer reading of Rogers and Barnes’ relationship. But even more importantly, there is nothing to suggest that such a relationship ever existed in the first place, and as such, those queer readings are not only misguided, but also libelous” (197).

In the aftermath of Steve's return to the world of the living and the battle of New York, the academia and the Internet react.

Barnes is now glaring at him for some reason. It's somewhat terrifying but also, oddly, a little reassuring— because that's emotion right there, which means there's still somebody behind those eyes. Somebody who seems to think Sam is being a bit slow on the uptake. "Time parameters exceeded. Mission failed."

"Wait." Sam narrows his eyes. "Is this some kind of... report? Debriefing?"

"Mission report," confirms Barnes, looking pleased. Well, looking slightly less murderous than before.

In which various people deal with things they never signed up for, but at the end of the day no one's particularly surprised.

“I heard you tell Cosette you hadn’t eaten yet, and I wanted to make it up to you.” As if on cue, a pitiful rumble comes from Grantaire’s stomach, but he’s looking at Enjolras and his smile is only a little hesitant. “Thanks.”

Cosette appears from behind Grantaire, holding the woman’s now finished drink. “Both of you go and sit down. I saved the table Enjolras was at because while some people had doubts, I had more faith.”

    “Cosette, the people –“

“The people will not die and never come back because they had to wait in line for five minutes. Go and eat the food that my stupid brother brought for you.”

The two obediently sit down. Enjolras tells Grantaire how much he liked his macaroons, tells him about his grandmother’s cursing in French over the cookies, and then listens to Grantaire talk about almond flour and egg whites for twenty-five minutes. When he finally does go back to work, Cosette comes over to wipe down the neighboring table.

“Could you two be a little more obvious?” She hisses. “I don’t think the entire country knows that you’re pining.”

“Cossette . . .” and then Enjolras pauses. He glances toward the counter to make sure Grantaire is deep in the territory of milk frothing and won’t be able to hear him. “Cosette, I really like him.”

“Yeah, I know,” She smiles kindly at him. “It’s sort of adorable and painful to watch. When will you guys be official?”

    “I don’t know . . . I don’t know if he likes me back.”

The supportive smile drops off of Cosette’s face like he personally slapped it off. “Jesus Christ.”

Boyd wears myth like he wears his suit, flat against his skin, just-right, sharp at his wrists and too-tight about his neck, the ghost of a dog-collar everyone can see but that same everyone is too afraid to mention. He died on Ava’s floor, under Raylan’s hands, as he will die again one day, blood flowing from him like a river, returning to Harlan’s hungry earth. He will die and he will die, and be born again until the time he isn’t, until the last of his nine lives is gone. The truth is that he was born to die, like every one of Harlan’s sons, born to become the myth he wears like a weapon, and he will die as many times as Harlan requires him to, until he becomes immortal in the death that waits for him, down in the mine where he failed to die the first time.
