    Summary

When Enjolras is invited to Marius and Cosette’s wedding, he fully intends to ignore the ‘plus one’ on the invite. He’s busy at work and he has a lot on - he doesn’t have time for relationships. What he doesn’t expect is for Grantaire to invite himself along and then hit it off immediately with all of his friends.

Now if everyone can just stop assuming he and Grantaire are dating, Combeferre and Courfeyrac will stop giving him that look, and they can get through the entire two weeks without bringing up what happened at Christmas, everything will be just fine.

“I was wondering if you might come home with me.” Merlin stops mid-rant and stares at him, and then down at his panini again, and back at Arthur. This is a panini of lies and pain. He can tell already.

“For Christmas? I’ve got an uncle and a mother and a sister waiting for me at home, in case you hadn’t remembered, I’m not going home with you just because you’re a workaholic.”

“No, it’s. My mum might be under the impression that we’re a little bit married.”

In which Merlin gets conned into spending Christmas with Arthur's family and pretending to be his husband, because somehow this is his life.

Arthur comes out of the bathroom and then hesitates really obviously at the side of the bed. “Just get in already,” says Merlin when he can’t stand it anymore, thumping the mattress on Arthur’s side of the bed. “There will be uncomfortable cuddling and probably even more uncomfortable morning erections for a few days, but I’m fairly sure our friendship has suffered worse. Like fake marriage, for instance.”

“Shut up,” says Arthur, but he gets in bed. His feet are freezing, because Arthur has terrible circulation, and when his hand brushes Merlin’s trying to get pillows arranged to his satisfaction, there’s a cold shock of metal on it, and since Arthur always takes his thumb ring off at night, Merlin knows what it is.

There are a few minutes of silence when they’re both settled, Merlin curled towards the wall and Arthur flat on his back, both of them knowing the other one isn’t asleep. “At least the families get along,” he offers when Arthur makes it quite clear he’s never going to say anything.

“That will be a great comfort at the fake divorce proceedings.”

“Oi, you don’t get to be a dick about this, this was your idea.”

“You should have said no like a reasonable human being and sent me here in disgrace and shame or to continue the façade!” Arthur pauses, because even he has to realize how insane that sounds. “Look, thank you. It’s just weird, suddenly having my best mate be my husband.”

Merlin tries really hard not to turn pink and mostly finds himself grateful that the room is dark. “Your best mate?”

“Shut up, I’m not saying it again.” Arthur makes a gloomy noise. “My mum loves you.”

    “That’s because I’m charming.”

“God knows what the appeal is.”

“You could have picked a different fake husband.”

“I’m afraid you’re stuck with me. No, but … thank you, Merlin, really. Somehow you’ve managed to be quite a passable husband, my mother is charmed, my stepmother is amused, my sister liked you already, and my father is at least willing to deal with you. So thanks.”

“You’re welcome,” says Merlin, and decides it’s in his best interest to start pretending he’s asleep before Arthur starts saying anything else stupid and lovely.

Enjolras nods. “I'll leave Joly to his inspection and the three of you to your reunion, then.” He looks at Grantaire on the bed again, his face caught somewhere between the unconscious frown of PASIV sleep and the complete relaxation and unconsciousness he's used to, in this room, and then he walks out.

“We're all home now,” he hears Joly say as he shuts the door. “You can come back now.”

Grantaire's life has a pattern: he pays his respects to Aphrodite, he goes to work, he loves Enjolras and provokes him because he can't bring himself to do otherwise. That seems unlikely to change, at least until Enjolras speaks out against the gods and ends up cursed. Grantaire does his best to help him, but it turns out it's just as hard to love Enjolras up close as it is from afar.

    Summary

Enjolras has spent pretty much the entire bus ride to the Musain trying to predict how this will go, but the thing that surprises him isn't that Combeferre isn't the first to notice, or that Joly doesn't start spouting something about infant mortality rates and immediately demand that everybody bathe in Purell. No, what startles Enjolras the most is that he manages approximately half a step through the door into the back room where they all meet before Grantaire rattles his glass down on the table in the back that he's taken for his own and drawls, "Is there something you forgot to tell us, Apollo?"

That silences the room, predictably enough. Everyone breaks off their conversations and swivels to stare at him. At him, and at the baby carrier that he's got hooked over one arm.

Grantaire is not a Double-O. He's not even a secret agent. He's not anything romantic. He's one of the interchangeable multitudes in Q Branch's Research & Development section. It means he spends a lot of time playing with dangerous weapons. He's quite happy where he is, thanks.

But where he is also happens to be a small windowless conference room with Q and not nearly enough alcohol.

"Les Amis. The leader calls himself E," Q says. "Supposedly short for 'Égalité', actually short for Enjolras. He's exactly your type."

Grantaire's type is smart, gorgeous, and bad for him. He says so.

"Precisely," says Q. "E's surrounded himself with a group of highly loyal followers, all of whom have remarkable discretion and talents. Quite remarkable. We need someone on the inside."

"Not it," Grantaire says. "I forgot, I'm cleaning out my inbox while washing my hair." Q looks at him mildly. Grantaire groans. "What are they, anarchists?"

"Worse," Q says, handing Grantaire a jumpdrive. "Socialists. You start training tomorrow."

So there's this artist. He could probably be compared to Banksy, but he's a lot more... cynical. He shares rooms with a poet who braids his hair with flowers, in a flat near Covent Garden they rent from a short-tempered shop keeper with a penchant for fans and who'd do anything if you mentioned Poland. Sometimes, the three of them will go and deface public buildings in London whilst completely smashed off their heads.

And then there's this, shall we say, 'revolutionary'. He has a band of other revolutionaries, who all meet at this cafe by Borough Market. He shares rooms with his best mate, a philosophy student, spends too much time with a flirty guy who has a thing for poets, goes boxing with a guy in a red vest, wants to punch the wet sop who drools on the blonde waitress and is getting tired of this guy who keep breaking his laptops through sheer dumb luck. Thank god the hypochondriac's there to keep an (slightly too) attentive eye on their stress levels.

The revolutionary thinks the graffiti artist's work is a waste of space. The artist thinks the revolutionary's campaigns are a waste of time.

And all the while, the poet and the flirt drool over each other in the background...

“Where the fuck have you been?” Feuilly yelled when he saw them coming, “How fucking long does it take to make your damned sign – Jesus Christ what the fuck’s wrong?”

“In the time we have been gone we climbed Mount Olympus,” Jehan sighed, leaning against the bonnet of the car and slithering down it so he was sat on the floor. “We have climbed to the heights of Olympus and met the gods...”

Completely stunned, and more than a bit scared Feuilly spun to Grantaire. “Say what now?”

But, it turned out, Grantaire wasn’t in much of a better state. Face covered with an expression of complete bemusement, he collapsed on the floor beside Jehan. “So much... passion, and, and fury and determination and jesus, that hair!”

    “Gods of Justice and Truth...”

“He looked like Apollo, A-fucking-pollo, with, with his jaw, and his blonde hair, and his fucking passion-”

“I’truth, if he was Apollo then the other must have been Hermes, residing in the sky, perched upon a pedestal...”

“No seriously, Feuilly, that guy was literally high up, like, standing on the ledge of the second storey or some shit-”

    “Courfeyrac...”

“But how could you look at him when fucking Apollo walks the fucking earth?”

And, to Feuilly’s horror, the two of them only went and sighed in unison.
