“My dear Mr. Baggins, you cannot possibly imagine I have brought you across the boundaries of the sundered world, bending every law of gods and men, over land and over sea and through the fathomless heights, for your health? Well, I did, of course I did, and I’d do it again. But it was not for your own good only that I brought you here. I have been on this world a very long time, Mr. Baggins, and if there is one thing that I have learned about the Wise and the Great, it’s that they benefit from the company of hobbits, and it’s the wisest and greatest who have most need of them.”

A wonderful tale of the effect of the Undying Lands on the hobbits, and the hobbits on the ones they meet there - including the Valar themselves. (One of my favourite tags of all time - "Gandalf and his strategic hobbit deployment".) Fëanor the language scholar, Bilbo, still as impertinent as ever, and Sam and his potatoes. :-)

I've loved all of rhymer23's Tolkien-based stories, but this one is an epic. It has one of my favourite fanfic literary devices, each chapter begins with an excerpt from one of the historical works written about the period, from the social historians to the Great Man obsessive.

It's a wide-ranging and nuanced tale, with sympathy for the different cultures and societies represented, and for the high and lows of human nature. It also brings a wide range of characters, both Tolkien's and original, to life, and gives us the chance to identify with their fears and their joys. I particularly liked her handling of Eowyn, one of my favourite characters, and the way she is coming to terms with her new life and the expectations placed on her.

    Summary

In a world where humanity is on the brink of extinction, the remaining members of the species are kept, guarded and protected, in self-sustaining compounds called “domes” while werewolves and other supernaturals run the rest of society. After Scott is bitten, Stiles is pulled from his dome to work at Beacon Hills, the largest supecity in what used to be California. There, he strikes up a surprising friendship with the Alpha Prime’s son and stumbles upon a series of secrets that may explain why the war with the Darach and her human separatist army never ended.

This is one of the best fanfics I've read. I love the way it intertwines an original take on a dystopian future with the characters we know and love, the kind of story that can really only be written as fanfic, and yet is so rich with its own world-building.

It uses elements that are all there in canon to create a mystery that unfolds at the author's pace, rather than the solution being obvious to anyone who knows the show, and yet the clues are all there, once you start to put them together.

I really liked the way it handles Stiles and Derek's relationship - a convincing slow burn that echoes elements of their canon relationship but didn't just assume they must be together. This was very much Stiles' story, but I loved the way it handles the other characters and their relationships, they were really convincing as people, rather than window dressing that happened to look like the actors.

A long series of Avengers/Stargate crossovers, and they are hands down some of the best stories I've read in ages.

Not only does the series have the things I love best in crossovers - both canons being given their due and the characters I love getting to know and respect one another, but it's also a great tale in its own right. It has great action sequences, perceptive inter-personal drama and character moments, and still takes time to recognise the humour that is a vital part of the originals.

It was started after Avengers, and there are some things in it that have been Jossed by the later Marvel films, but if you can handle it as an AU which brings in elements of the back story from the comics then it's well worth the read.

The main romantic pairing is Winter Soldier/Natasha, but it is far more than a pairing story, with attention paid to her all relationships with her friends and colleagues, as a background to a universe-changing tale of high adventure. The main Stargate focus is John Sheppard, for reasons that will become clear, but it makes good use of many SG-1 and SGA characters.

[Crossover with Sir Gawain and the Green Knight and The Wedding of Sir Gawain and Dame Ragnelle.] Merlin couldn't have picked a worse time to finally tell Arthur about his magic. In the wake of the battle against the immortal army, a strange visitor disrupts the court, calling himself the Green Knight and proposing a test of the court's integrity. Although Uther turns him away, several of Camelot's northern allies end up mysteriously beheaded over the next few months, and Arthur, Merlin and the knights set out to investigate. They encounter more than they'd bargained for on the way—a reckless young boy, a lady in search of a husband, a centuries-old fairytale that holds more than a grain of truth... and a challenge that ends up being more than just a game.

This makes excellent use of the Arthurian Green Knight story, while weaving it into the Merlin take on the legends. The length gives Arthur and Merlin long enough to really come to terms with the magic reveal - it isn't easy, but their relationship is strong enough to overcome the very real problems caused by Merlin's secrets and Arthur's learnt hatred of magic. That isn't all there is to the story, though - it's one thread in a tale of Morgana's latest attempt to destroy Camelot, with all of the knights given their due and Gwaine really put to the test.
