“Why won’t this thing ever open normally?” Gansey asked, staring at the door, although he sounded more nonplussed than annoyed. Nonplussed. That was a word that had made its way into his vocabulary, Adam thought with some amusement, purely because of Gansey.
“Noah keeps floating through the lock,” Adam explained, just as Noah did just that. Noah paused next to Gansey, who looked at him suspiciously for a second and then shook his head with a sigh.
“What have I done?” Noah asked, with a look of innocent confusion. Adam could see the hint of a smirk at the corner of Noah’s translucent mouth.
“You’ve ruined everything, Noah,” Ronan mumbled into his pillow. “You’ve fucking ruined Christmas.”
Now Noah really did look confused. “What? It's September."
“Firewhiskey,” Adam said, by way of explanation.
(Or, the one where they're all in Hogwarts, and Ronan is a dick and Adam is in love with him. Edited to include a second chapter.)

Ronan was just—this. His silent presence next to Adam was a statement as loud as if he'd said it.
He gets called out as a thief anyway, a rude “Oi,” hurtled across the field, followed by a boy about his age and about his size and still somehow a thousand times larger. He strides across the field with all the confidence that belonging bestows, and everything in his glare makes Adam feel like an outsider, an invader, a stranger dredging dust and unwanted heartache along with him.
Pynch Week Day One // Alternate Meetings
Ronan didn’t say anything, he knew better than that. He wanted to. All he wanted more than to say something was to march up to Robert Parrish’s door and introduce his fist to his face. Repeatedly. All he could do now was chew on the inside of his cheek and watch Adam’s careful movements. They’d been over it often enough that Adam’s feelings had been made very clear, and Ronan himself was skating too close to the edge today to keep the conversation anything approaching civil.
“Wanna see something cool?” He asked instead.
It’s moving dolly day, and Ronan thinks Adam could do with a distraction. No alterior motives. The funny feeling in his stomach is just because he likes driving fast, that’s all
"I'm fucking fine, I don't need to do anything!"
"Say that the next time you get a concussion! Or, maybe, next time you won't be able to say anything because you'll be dead!"
Adam can see the naked fear in Ronan's eyes, and it shuts him up for a moment. Ronan's usually like a closed book - only showing a bare minimum of himself, a carefully chosen and put together facade, mostly with rage hiding it from sight like prickly thorns that will cut you if you stray too close.
Adam doesn't even dare mention the pounding ache he can feel behind his temple, a souvenir from his dad just before he left a few hours ago. It will only make things worse.
