It’s five years since Bonnie and Damon took Evilaric down, with Elijah’s help. Spoilers for 3.21.
**
On the ground a few feet from the entrance to the crypt is a body.
It’s a completely familiar body. Damon knows every inch of it. He knows where to kiss it to produce glorious moans. He knows what it tastes like.
Except no because Alaric is dead and more than dead; he is the ash in the coffin in there, slowly being taken away by the eddies of air that sneak into the crypt.
It is Alaric. It smells like Alaric. It’s wearing Alaric’s clothing. The clothing he died in and was resurrected in for a final time. Damon falls to his knees and reaches out. Dances his fingers over the small of Alaric’s back.
It can’t be real, it really can’t.

Alaric's head aches. His mouth is as thick as if it was stuffed with cotton wool.
“I apologize.” The voice is distinctive but the accent is indefinable. Only one voice quite like that in Mystic Falls, perhaps in the whole world. Elijah's voice. “You can’t possibly be comfortable. I am making arrangements for more suitable accommodations but it may take a day or more. I am not well equipped in Mystic Falls for this sort of venture.”

Alaric has something on his mind, but he's not talking.
“You’ve been distracted for weeks, and you’ve been refusing to talk about it for exactly as long.” Damon splutters. “So seriously? Whatever the fuck it is, can we just fight about it and move on?”
Alaric puts down his glass with a soft thunk, takes a couple of steps towards Damon, regret and exhaustion twisting his features. “Nothing to fight about, Damon. Seriously. I’m just working through some stuff. Is that allowed?”

“I could dump the car. Buy a bus ticket. Except I can’t dump the fucking piece of shit car. Because it’s the only thing I own and all my stuff’s in it. I can’t stay here.” Rick kicks the tyre but not like he means it. “And I have nowhere to go.”
Sam nods wisely. “Want my opinion?”
Rick offers a strangled laugh. “Why the fuck not?”
“If you’ve got nowhere to go and no way to get there, next best thing seems to me to be to just stay put.” -
