'You're a wizard, Harry' is easier to hear from a half-giant when you're eleven, rather than from some kids on a tube platform when you're seventeen and late for work.

All the Crawley girls have soulmarks. You'd think that would make things easier.

“You,” she says, and her voice is breathless and quiet. They are alone, there is no one to say a word but her, and Branson's eyes are burning in his face.

    Summary

About the Nauglamír and the other side of the story. Of culture clash, betrayal, and lost art.

“Do you know, Gimli, I would be happy to hear about your people’s memory of the Great Necklace, and the terrible dispute that led to the sack of Doriath. It was a tragedy of deep import."

Gimli grew serious; he sat up and looked at Elrond for a long moment with grave, dark eyes. “Forgive me, Lord Elrond, but I don’t think you would. Be happy, I mean, when you heard our account of the thing."

    Bookmarker's Notes

Starred! The story is so well crafted I could follow it without actually having read the silmarillion (though I might have to now), which is wonderful because it's just chock full of all the best things.

differing versions of a story! And nuance! And traditional, ritualistic storytelling with music you can practically hear it's so well described! With a choir! And translator! And Gimli being clever and good, AND making the point that you can't blame all the hate on the evil artefacts!
