  1. Rec 9

    Summary

There are places in the library Lucien does not think about. The neglected books of which he refrains from running his fingertips over when his path leads him through their stacks, and he spares only a cursory examination of their titles when they become lost.

    Notes

There's a way in which writing around the Endless, rather than about them, tells the truest stories. Lucien and Daniel's library.

It's only mercy what he does. He finds them reading, clear-eyed and unwilling to leave. They fall asleep in the stacks with tear-streaked cheeks and clutching books that will disappear on waking. He sends them back into the Dreaming wild. He removes the titles from their sleeping fingers and frowns at the breaking lines between their eyebrows. For an acute moment, he feels observed and he turns slowly to miles upon miles of closed covers, silent but for the dreamer's tranquilized breathing.

    Summary

King Azaz the Unabridged requires Milo's assistance -- again!

    Notes

    GRAMMAR. CHAOS. DICTIONOPOLIS. OHMYHEART.

One such sign – Drive Slowly – was unnecessarily uprooted, only to be replaced with another sign – Slow – solidly staked into the ground just beyond it.

  3. Rec 4

    Summary

A brief look at the Lands of Wisdom on a snowy winter's day.

    Notes

So much of the wordplay and style that makes the book so fantastically fun.

The Humbug pulled his hat down further over his ears and shivered. "Why are we here? We could be somewhere warm. With a fire," he said.
"Because this is exciting! A snowball fight!" Tock said, leaping over a snowdrift. "It will be fun!"
    "You don't even have hands."
Tock barked in amusement and turned so his clock face was showing. "Yes, I do!"

  4. Rec 5

    Summary

Some people will do whatever it takes to get to Kansas.

    Notes

I'm getting Everything Is Illuminated flashbacks: writing nonnative English is insanely tough, and this author does so incredibly well. Vibrant, funny, wonderful portrait of Natalya.

One thing plague has not changed is that everybody needs another people. We are having our assignments, all of us, but is not costing us our humanity.

  5. Rec 3

    Summary

Clytemnestra is no longer a pawn.

    Notes

Such potent, just rage -- and beautifully rendered. Grand in a way Aeschylus would recognize.

To tread on fine draperies, that is offense to the gods, but to slay a young girl, that gives a fine wind, the wind that sends revenge upon a distant city.
