    Bookmarker's Notes

My all-time favorite post-Hogwarts fic. The only fic I consider to adhere to Snape's characterization from the books. This seems like a natural progression, VERY natural, so much so that their characterizations remain true to JKR throughout. This is the Snape we all know and adore anyway, not the Snape we all adore because he CHANGED, as in almost every other fic. It's a long, sometimes tough read, but the triggery bits are handled so they touch your heart but don't disturb it. I never feel like a raw nerve when I read this one, as I do with others. Some other things I adore: The Weasleys, natural/smooth progression, Hogwarts setting, powerful!Harry, sex magic, slow burn. <3

    Summary

Pendragons and Dragonlords are two sides of the same coin, and their alliance has lasted for centuries. It is a time-honoured tradition for the first-born Pendragon to be given to the Dragonlords on the eve of Beltane on the year that he or she turns sixteen. On the year that Arthur participates in the ritual, things take an unexpected turn.

Superb Arthur/Merlin, spot-on chars, a little bit of all the very best tropes, no personal triggers (thank fuck!), definitely one for rereading when I'm missing my boys. <3

    Bookmarker's Notes

My all-time favorite post-SV Clex. I didn't read it for years, avoiding the triggers. Not one other fic has ever been able to handle this particular trigger with respect and raw honesty. There's a surprising amount of lying to be done after a relationship like that is brought to light and this fic just refuses to lie about it. Lex's thoughts and feelings are eerily true to life and definitely things I wish I could (even once, with no threat of disgust, shock, horror) say out loud. I have to white-knuckle my way through the first half of it, but it's worth it - it's cathartic every single time. Apart from revisiting demons and indulging in how accepting Clark is/how honest Lex lets himself be (gorgeously in character, btw), there's the fact that every single thread of uncertainty about Lex and every single surety about Clark is held up for inspection and somehow explained, reconciled, accepted. They're the boys we know already and the men we hope they'll become, the couple they were supposed to become. The reasons they were driven apart are so brilliantly thought out that I found myself thinking back to SV dialog and nodding now that it makes sense. There were too many questions unanswered and I swear, this fic seeps into and fills up every single fracture line. Neither of their faults and both of their faults - it's the only way it could ever have made sense. If their story has to end for me, if I have to pick a place to stop knowing them and never know more of them, this is where I choose it to end. Definitely head!canon now, so much so that I forget other people don't already know that all of this happened. Note to self: Don't start this one if you can't finish it - devote a single day to read and process, preferably alone.
